V‘ has; Gov't Hands Out Booklet On Rules For Small Boats OTTAWA (CP)~«The transport department has distributed “well over" 100,000 copies of its pack~ aged rules and reconunendations tor small-boat operators, an of- ficial Wednesday. About 200,000 copies or! the 40- nage b o o k l e t, entitled Safety Afloat, were printed. John Hamilton, depantment entail boats officer, said in an interview Wednesday he has just come back from Vancouver and hopes to leave tor the East Coast next week in travels designed to spread the word about observing the rules on Canada's far - flung waterways system. V Copies of the booklet are be- .mg sent to “people who write in 1 fio’r it.” RCMP and provincial po‘ ,lice carry some and others. are available at customs points where boats must be registered. One regulation requires licens- ing of all vessels weighing less :filan 15 tons and rated at 10 horsepower or more, whether in- board or outboard powered. STARTED APRIL 1 ' __ The regulations went into ef- J tact April 1, lumping bits of pre- mus legislation plus fresh. They cover such aspects of boating as marldng, safety equipment, fuel “ systems. collision negulations, fog ‘9 y 9 mooring and tratfic rules besides licensing. , Mr. Hamilton said in reply to a question that he is not certain whether there will be revision OI the recommendations governing boat overloads as a result of the recent Lake Sirncoe drowning of five RCMP officers. There "unfortunately" was no compulsion on this matter of rec- ommended load limits. The booklet recommends “com- monsense precautions” in both overloading and use of motors too powerful [for the boat involved. It provides a “rough guide” on the ratio of length to passengers or maximum weight load. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT Mr. Hamilton said observance of rules is better it‘was but “There is great room tor im- provement.” Police may board a vessel at any time for an inspection to en force regulations concerning life- saving and fire equipment. In passenger boats not over 18 feet long, one approved standard lifejacket or lifesaving cushion is required tor each person aboard. Similar regulations on equip- ment apply to power - driven pleasure craft. . and Hanger signals, water skiing, Regulations also cover speed of _::*~Spring Park School Awards " Certificates And Prizes Students of Spring Rank School held their closing term exercises in the school’s auditorium.
