THE DAIL” ' DNAMINER, WED NESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 Friendship. Friendship is love's full beauty unalloyed With passion that many waste in selfish- ness, Fed only at the heart and never cloyed ; Such is our friendship, ripened but to bless It draws the arrow from the bleeding wound With cheery look that makes a winter bright 3 It saves the hope from falling to the ground, And turns the restless pillow towards the light, To be another's in his dearest want, At struggle with a thousand racking throes, When all the balm that heaven itself can grant, Is that which friendship’s soothing hand be stows I How joyful to be joined in such a love We two—may it portend the days above! -The New Day Sonnets, T. G. Haze. ——————- EQ OH— Ismail Pasha’s Fate. LURED CONSTANTINOPLE, IMPRISONED, AND PERHAPS DONE AWAY WITH—HAD $10,000,000 wiTH HIM. To A Paris despatch says : ‘* The latest ad- vices from Constantinople concerning the rumored attempt that was made to poison Ismail Pasha, the ex-Khedive of Egypt, say it is etill uncertain whether the attempt was successful. The ex-Khedive allowed himself to be tempted to the city by an in- vitation from the Sultan, and once inside Constantinople all idea of his ever being able to leave it had to be abandoned. Ismail was rarely, if ever, seen in public, and when any of his old friends called at the palatial residence which had been set apart for his use, they were informed that he no longer continued to receive visitors. The inference from this was that he was no longer master of his own movements, as otherwise this seclusion was inexplicable, and enquiries now confirm this, and show that Ismail was virtually under lock and key. It is known Ismail took with him to Constantinople bonds payable to bearer amounting to nearly $10,000,000. The ex- Khedive became addicted to the morphine habit, and as a consequence of his excesses soon showed signs of mental derangement, He has evidently fallen into the hands of his enemies. It is at present impossible to obtain any details, but there is every reason to believe that the former famous ruler of Egypt has been removed in accord- ance with the old traditions of Turkish despotism.” ——— A A Secretary James G.{Blaine addressed a mass meeting at Waterville, Maine, in which he declared that the United States had reached a point where one of its highest duties was to enlarge the arca of its foreign trade. He said the U. S.twas not seeking annexation of territory. Odds and Ends. ‘Lhe most valuable metal in the world is said to be gallium, quoted at $3,250 an! ounce. And yet the average man finds that gold is good enough for him, moder- ately remarking : ‘‘ Let me have the gold of the country and I care not who bags the gallium.” Mrs. Brown—‘ Bridget, I don’t under- stand. You say you paid ten cents for a glass of soda water for Master Edward, and yet he tells me he did not have any.” **That’s all right, mum; I bought it for him, but he was so warm I thought it might hurt him, so I drunk it myself, mum.”— Fliegende Blatter. “+e Consumption can be Cured.
