Great things are claimed for the
_propcsej measure, and it has attract-
ed World-wide attention. Among the
iallt-ged advttntalies are that it would
proinote early rising, give an hour
_and twenty minutes more daylight
for business, benefit the physique of
the nation and so on. At this dis-
tance it isa little ditllcult tu realise
how all these advantages, would be
likely to result from so simple an
expedient as setting the clocks ahead
of solar time.
As it is now noon is approximately
at the middle of the day and iuill-
nlght at the middle of the period of
darsnefs. On January lst the sun
rises at 7.52 a. in. and sets at. 4.52
p. ln., the afternoon being 48 min-
utes longer than the forenoon. tin
_lst July the sun rises at 4.39 a. in.
and sets :it 8.03 p. rn. giving an al-
terrloon 42 minutes longer than tht-
fort-noon. Now let us see what efftct
the setting ofall the clocks forward
The sun would not change its real
time of rising or setting but. by the
clocks would on January 1 appear to
rise at 9.12 a‘. m. and set at 6.12 p.in_
Oa July lthe clock time for tinrise
would be 5.59 and of uunset. 9.23. ln`|
January the afternoon would have
three hours and 'twenty-four minute.;
long-er daylight than the forcnoon,
and in July the difference of length
would be three hours and twenty-
four minutes.
What would be the advantage of in-
creasing the length of the afternoon
at the expense of the foreuuon, the
afternoon being alseady the longer
half of the day 'P Or, take the case
of the working maxi and his ten hour
day. He naturally requires his mid-
day meal when his day's work is half
completed. With the clocks set. a-
head eighty minutes he must begin
work that much earlier in the real
day or change his dinner hour to ti
l-titer period than he has been accus-
tomed to by clock time.
The common sense of the situation
would seem to be to leave the clocks
an they are, keeping the same time
as the sun us near as maybe. The
hours for rising, going to work ani
taking meals might be made to fit in
with the daylight season, _without
changing the clocks at all. In these
days, however, every new fad will
have its advocates and there are
