ISLAND. ‘THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, ‘LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Protect our Gam >. Sm,—TIt goes without saying that our and that P.-E. Island will soon cease to have any attraction for what we may call the sporting tourist. This of course, means a yearly loss to the Province, (and not a swall one either) in hard cash. Sportsmen, even if they do not come in large numbers, are one of the best kind of advertisements to and for all classes of tuuris‘s, : game a.d tish are fast becoming extinct, | allies SE 1891, aces — | Professor Shuttleworth at Crapaud. Professor Shuttleworth lectured in Cra- paud Hall on the 3ist January, 1891. Jobn Moore, Esq , occupied the chair and the undersigned was requested to act as Secre- tary. The Hall was comfortably filled by re- presentative farmers from different sections, viz : Lots 28, 29 and 30, allof whom ap- peared to take a lively interest in the pro- ceedings of the meetiny. The Professor having been made a few preliminary remarks, intimating that one of the farmers present would Apart from the protection of game, etc., it is more apparent each yesr, that there should be some regulations made and strictly cnforced as to the carrying and use of firearms. In nearly every section of ; this Province, boys (some of them not) more than niue or ten years of age) may be wet on the public ruads, carrying loaded; firearms of all kinds, from the small revol- ver up to the old flint musket. I think it may safely be said that a year: scarcely or ever» passes, without damage \done to life or property by firearms at the ‘hands of irrespomstble persons. The law lfor closed time, #&c., for the various kinds jof game is seldom enforced, and outside a few sportamen, is little known and less regarded, i Now, in addition to the strict eaforce- ‘ment of the closed seasons for game, &c., ke would suggest the passing of an act by the Legistature to license the carrying of a ‘gun, or in fact, any kiad of firearm, A sma!) suin for the license and penalty for shooting without, would, I feel sure, pro- ; tect in 4 great measure the young and im- mature game, and also abate the firearm! nuisance. Would it not-be a good idea for the Fish and Game Society to calla convestion of sportsmen and others interested to take this matter inte consideration and to peti- ition the Legislature on the auwhject. : Yours &e. S HOOTEST. Prince County. Queen Square. Srn,—‘* The poor ye shall always have with you; tl ssed is he that considereth the poor.” So reads the Good Book. : I am glad to see Charlottetown 80 nobly | trying to carn this promised blessing. Already our good Oddfellows and grand old Caledonian Club h .ve realized large arucunts for the peor of the city ; and now a charity ball at the Hotel Davies is en the tapis, and bids fair to be a great success. Now Sir, how about the distribution of these mone,s? ‘tbat it sheuld be handed over to strong, able-bodied men (although poor) I dao_ not think right; but let them he employed, give them a good day's pay fora good day's work, What shall we put them at? Is it necessary to ask. My anewer is, Quecn Square. Procure twenty good shovels, likewise ‘twenty poor, but strong men (fifty could easily be raised this severe winter), fall into line at the Post Offi-e, and now divide them into two's, facing all points of the compass. At tie word reaiy, let every man bend his back to the shovel and open up the many sheep tracks which now jead to and from our bust- ness centres, and so for the sake of common respectability let us have a path wide enough to p»ssa brother in distress. How do we manage now? Just this way for dwys after a snow storm: Either jump off the track into snow up to the waist (if you are small of stature), shove the ae out of the way, or as the good old goat, lie down and let your friend, or enemy, walk over your prostrate form. But really, Mr. Editor, only those who many times daily travel this garden of two rovernments have any knowledge ef what a snow fight itis. Thanking you for space, and hoping the distributers of these moneys will use some such method in employing those out of work in our midst. Yours, A QUEEN “QUARE VoYaGER. oe Keily's Cross Notes. Prof. Shuttieworth then came forward and said that the subject to which he invit- ed their attention would be the plants, and to his subject he was fully alive. He spoke introduced, | for upwards of an hour on the different pro- ‘ductions of the farm and submitted tests of | carbonic acid, etc., which were very inter- | esting. He also explained the effect of dit- goud cultivation and an ample eupply ot manure. The chairman, in offering some objec- tions to the raising of sheep on the farm, said that there was no protit in such stock, but strongly recommended attention to dairyiug, and claimed that it cost as much to winter five sheep as it dues for one cow, the yield of which would ba eyual to $25, a" five sheep were worth not more than Mr. W. C. Lea objected to the theory, but highly approved of mixed farming. Mr, Wm. Patrick fully agreed with Mr. Lea’s remarka, and also recommended seed- ing down with lime. Hereupon Mr. W. C. Lea observed that he had put lim: overa field, except one ridge in the centre which had no lime, and that he could never see any difference in the crop. Professor Shuttleworth explained that in the making of compost the farmers should use less lime than manure, and the meeting A vote of thanks, unanimously carried, was tendered, to which the Professor re- plied in a very courteous manner, and said that he hoped to visit Crapaud at some future time. O, B. Wapmay, Secretary. 2nd Feb., 1891. It is the general opinion here that the Government have moved in the right direc- tion by procuring the services of Professor Shuttleworth; and we believe we voice the sentiments of ths farmers generally when wo say that his services will bea great boon to the Province at large. And we would here suggest that the farmers of Crapaud and other places do form them- selves into clubs and meet once a week for mutual improvement and instruction in agricultural! pursuits. 0. B, W.
