Ir is pleasing to note that the citizens are at last being roused to the condition of the Corporation. lt is not that the City is very deeply in debt. On the contrary, its debt, when compared with other cities, is ligt. The recurrence of | , at | by sharing them, and diminishing their trou: - | bles by mutual t such a state of Civic affairs, shows th there is something essentially and radica ly wrong in the constitution ; and, in ont | epinion, the Examines correspondent — ‘‘Opserves,” has indicated in what it is wrong. Mr. Hamilton was proposed as Secretary by Mr. D. Matheson, but he had no desire to act in that capacity, when Mr. Currie was pro- sed, Mr. Matheson withdrew his motron. here was no vote taken on his motion aud Mr. Currie was, we believe, unanimously elected Secretary.— Patriot. Tas Argus of Tuesday say that fairplay isa jewel not to be found in the Patriot treasures. He might have added that truth-telling has long since become one of the lost arts with the same paper. The, above extract, which is in reference to the bloom is taken off the ‘the highest ideal of felicity. (hardships of life together. lsee asinng young man stacking up money) | Bagagements. " ” { Ough? ‘enzagements to be long or short? It has often: been said that nothing helps so much to steady a young man as the being en- | gaged toa girl whom he loves, and for whom he works to prepare a suitable home. ‘The so- licitude of David Coppertield’s friend Trad dies to buy bits of furaiture —tlower-pots, and | such like--for the house where he and his be-| trothed were to dwell was a pretty thing, and much to be commended ; but, on the other | hand, it is undeniable that long engagements | have their drawbacks, especially if the young people see much of each other luring the pe- | riod of probation. In this case much of the | POBTRY OF COURTSHIP, and no less gilding off the prospects of mar- riage. ‘There may be a_ great deal to say against the policy ef \ edding In haste, but | peuple who take to each other for better an L} for worse, in all the illusion of mutual trast and admiration, go through a time of ecstacy) unknown to those who who marry quite| rationally. The honeymoons of such pairs | ‘are halcyon epochs to be remembered all a hfe, ‘Jong, and if the after periods seem duil and | , ie a iJoveless by comparison, yet it is something to} have lived, for however brief a time, up to} Resides, there is} no little sweetness in having faced the trst ifa young couple have to encounter poverty, and if they con- quer it side by side, lightening all their labors CONSOLATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT, they forge links which must bind their hearts closer and closer together. It is pleasant to hear a smiling woman remark: ‘‘We had nothing at all when we weré married! but see nuw how cozy we have made our home.” This means that there has been cheerful hard on the one side, thrift and self-denial on the cther—in fact union. After all. THE is an apparatus that should sit on two parts of ghoulders ; and there is nothing very seemly! in seeing a girl wait to \ part of of it until it has been nicely padded with quilted satin. My advice to young people who must pass through long engagements is YOKE OF MARRIAGE DeSable meeting, is a case in point. We now emphatically repeat what we said | a week ago, that ‘‘ a motion to appoint Mr. | Hamilton, of the Patriot, Secretary was de- feated by a vote of the meeting.’ That) the motion was withdrawn and that no|/ vote was taken on it, are simply barefaced falsehoods. Such of the people of DeSabie ashad not their eyes‘ completely opened by Mr. Stewart's mendacity at the meeting, will be able to judge from this how utterly unscrupulous and unreliable ara the state- ments of Mr Stewart and the Patriot. If the people of DeSable—irrespective of party— know the Patriot's statements in regard to the meeting te be untrue, they will be able to place a proper'estimate on other state- ments contained in the same paper on sub- jecte with which they are not so well ac- quainted. > o- e+ > Fatal Accident From the Hlectric Light. [thas been thought that one of the chief advantages of the electric light lies in its comparative safety. It dees not explode like kerosene, nor can it ignite flying cur- tains like gas. Caildren and servants can- not get atthe flame without breaking the globe that holds the vacuum, in which case the fame would go out. All this is com- fortable tu think of, and we suppose it is in substance trustwocthy. Bat there is a bitter drop even in the honey of this cup. A fatal example is immediately at hand in proof. At a theatre in Birwingaan, England, a Mr, Bruno, a musician, has Just been killed on the spet by the machinery of an electric light. The London Sines gives details of the accident, from which it appears that Beuno unfortunately causht hold of two brass connections at sucli @ moment as to receive the full shock of the electric current, generated by a battery used to supply the lamps of the building. Bruno was unable to let go the brass con- nections, and sank down insensible, drag- ging them with him. Medical aid was useless, for, in spite of every restorative, the poor iman died. Of course, with a light battery, no such danger as this would exist, but the accident shows that in many cases such risks from electricity lights would have to be provided fer.—New York Heen- ing Post. —_——— oe The Proposed Worild’s Fair. The World’s Fair bill, to be acted upon by Congress, is summarized as feliows: It states that the fair isto be held at New York in 1333, in commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the treaty of the peace and of the recognition of American independence; provides fur the appoint- ment of two commissioners from each State, one from each Territory and one from the} district of Columbia, and names sixty com- missioners from the city of New York; that the exposition shall be held under the direction of this commission as oa0 body, and that the Beard of Finance shall be elected by the subscribers to the stock, and that these elected thereby become, if not already s, a part of the commissiou—thus avoiding any troubles that might arise from a dual organization ; the capital stock is placed at $12,000,000, in shares of $10) each ; forsigu natious are to be invited by the General Government to participate in its exhibition ; no appropriation is asked for. It is hardly to be supposed that any \inillion bettles sould annually. to aee as little of each other as possible ; and likewise to correspond sparingly. Quarrels are easily hatched, even oa paper, and they are always sure to arise if an exchange of love-letters be commenced at the dan erous rate of one a day, or week. This pace 1s tvo fast to last. Ishonld say that one letter afirtnight was ample If this wise abstem- iousnesa from the use of pen and ink be tried ; if the loving pair see cach other but two or three times a year, at Christmas, at Easter, for perhaps halt a week during the summer ; aud if during their separation tuey remind one another prettily of their reciprocal affection by gifts of tlowers, triukets, nice hemmed pocket- haudkerchiefs, and worsted, then the rocky time of a long en- gagement may possibly be sailed through without accident. Nevertheless, all this leads up to repeating that when two young people make up their minds to marry, the sooneer they do so the better.—London Truth. + -_eos * - - — Fires in Japan. ‘he late disastrous fire in Tokio, Japan, which destroyed soine 18,000 houses, and rendered homeless some titty thousand peo- ple, would be looked upon as a terrible dis- | aster in any other city, but when it is taken into aceeunt that the houses are iittle better than ordinary sized dry-goods boxes, and can be easily built ina day or two by -their cheerful owners, the result is nut so terrible! as at first supposed. The Tokio Fire De- partment is a more ridiculous organization than the brain of any burlesque mins trel has yet conceived, and dues absolutely nothiag towards extinguishing a fire, though it sometimes liunts the district in which the fire is to burn by tearing down buildings, and thus robbing it of fuel. Charles Lamb telis about Chinamen, who, for centuries burned down their houses in order to roast their pigs, before some invent- : or of more genius than Edison discovered | that it was not absolutely necessary to burn | a house in order to roast a pig. Tho Jap- | anese to this day seem to be corresponding ly careluss about fives, and burn their houses down when they have not a juicy pig therein to serve as an inducement to the destruction of their property. They are very quick to learn, however, from civi- lized nations, and it may not be many years before they succeed in establishing a Fire Departinen, supplied with hese quite as un- trustworthy as any to be foundin the hands of the firemen of Charlottetown. * eee. - A Good Thing. | German Syrup is the special prescrip:| tion of Dr. A.
