The Saturday Review, in its summary of the situation, says: ‘“‘The constituencies cvuld not have given a much wore decided answer to Lord Beaconstield’s appeal, but | why they have given it is something nebody can exactly say. Probably many electors are tired of the Governinent mere- ly because it has beeen six years in oftice ; but there are some things the. elections have placed beyond contest. They shew that the publicans have not exercised the influence it was expected they would ; that the Liberals were not divided by crotchets ; that their party organization is much im- proved ; and that the moderates have, asa rule neither abstained nor gone over, but have voted with their party.” The Ston lard says, ‘It is useless to ignore the fact, mn» longer open to question, that the Liberais wiil be im possession of a ma- jority when Parliament meets.” The Standard tien says: **There is no ground fer supposing that there will be a Liberal majority, independent of the Home Rule vote.” The Times says ‘‘The first question is the ecemposition of the new Cabinet. Lord Hartiugdon’s speech, to some degree, epens the question ef whe will lead the Liberals. Bot itis for Lord Beaconsfield te advise the Queen who is to be the chief parliamentary leader of the Liberals, Lord Granville, who, on the ground of past ser- vices, rank and ability has a claim upen the position. To the Editor of the Kxaminer. Sir,—From diferent sources L learn there is likely to be an exodus from P. KE. {stand to Colorado in the spring. farmers, fn merchants, &c., all mechanics, clerks, making up their minds to start in a few months. They appear to look upon Color- ado as an El Dorado, a later Canaan, flow ak ing with milk and honey, mountains full of silver and gold, streaming dowa like lava, ready-made employment to suit the appli- leants of all classes. These seem to be the ' prevailing ideas formed in P. BE. Island of 'this land out west. Well, if they start in ‘haste they willcertainly have ample time to irepent at leisure. A letter appeared in a late number of the Patriot, written from | Laadville, which puts the matter in a fair ‘light. Colorado is not the place it has been |represented to be. ‘This epidemic is not (confined to my native place. it is raging with intensity in all parta of the United ‘States. The mining fever also has smitten large numbers ‘*down east.” Witheut a ‘doubt, from all appearances this year will ibe the greatest mining year Colorado, or | perhaps any State in the Union, will or jimay ever witness again. Thousands are leven now and will, in a very shert time, be flocking in to try their luck at the wines. About one in five hundred will ‘strike it, and the country will shortly be tilled to overflowing with poor prospectors, | Pat Malloy style—they willgu ‘home again | as poor as they began,’ sadder but wisermen., Men with plenty of money and brains may \foliew on the heel of a mining camp, |speculate and make in some instances huge lfortues. Even they iiss it sometines | Emigrants coming here without a fair sup- oly of the “ready” will probably be half starved and without work half their time. Uo these who have little money and witheut a good trade,(a skilled mechanic at that,)to auch I would say, it would be utter folly, and wadness to attempt this place. A smart, active twechanic, withcut the incumbrances of a wile (for soa time at all events) might do well here, as mining is the rage in Denver also, and a large number of the mechanics will in all prvbability start off for the Gunnison, and Dolores districts seeking the precious in the spring, and vacaucies will he created by Itisarisk. Itis a com- paratively easy matter to reach Colorado, but itis another thing to wet back again. Bat resolution has already been in spirit, very cunspicuonsiy infringed upon, aud it can net be doubted that a very strong pressure will bs brousht to bear upon hia in order te induce bin to abandon it. Nobody, however, cu: doubt that Mr. Gladstone is @ must poteut force on the Liberal side, but for bim ‘here is no sign that the policy of the Government would have been su Vehementiy challenged. It is Mr. Giad stone who has led and inspired the assauit which has now been so conspicuously sue- cessful, aud he must be regarded as repre- senting the views of that class uf veters to whom the Liberal wajority is due.” The same article points to a remark of Mr. Gladstone, in aspeech at West Calder on the Sed, to ihe eifect that-he neither di- rectly ner in irectly insinuated te any one that he bad come there as the clef of the party, or thai a return to office at his tine vf fife was his desire.
