Mark Twain was fifty years old on the | 3%h of November. They had a little cele- bration at his home ic H wrtford, and among the letters read on the occasion was one from Oliver Wendell Holmes, consisting of a poem whic) concluded as follows :— Before vou learned to bite or munch Still kicking in your cradle, The Muses mixed a bow! of punch And Hebe seized the ladle. Dear babe, whose fiftieth year to-day Your ripe half century rounded, Your books the precious draught betray The laughing Nine compounded. So mixed the sweet, the sharp, the strong, Each finds its faults am ed, The virtues that to each belong In happier union blended. rie And what the flavor can surpass Of sugar, spirit, lemons? So while one heaith fills every glass Mark ‘Twain for Baby Clemens! a —— Scientific Miscellany. THE DAMMING PoLAR Sea.— The polar current passin. between Labra-} dor aod New!oundland, appears to de- flect the Gulf Stream from the shores ot the United States and the British Pro- vinee-, interposing a cold wal! of water between the land and the geni«l warmth of the current’ from the topics. By building a dam seross the narrow Straits of Balle Isle—about ten miles wide and averaging about 150 feet in depth—Mr. Jobu ©. Goodridge, Jr., suyyests that the icy stream might be turned aside iato mid-ocean. Then, it is believed, the Gal! Stream wou'd skirt the American evast and materially change its climate from Cape Hatteras to Newfoundiand, free og the Guif of St. Liwrence from icebergs and giving to Nuva Scotia the mildness of Cape Muy Usine tae Eanra's is abuo ‘ant reason for believing thal the earth’s crustis very thir, usserts Mr. J. Scarkie Gardner, aud it seems not impossible thatrome means muy be devised for utilizing tle intense heat of the molton muss below. This is already being done, io fact, to s*me ex- tent, an artesinn well having been bored at Pesth to obtain ware water for pub- Higeat. —There lie b the, etc. From adebthof abont 3000 feet a large quantity of wuter heated. to 160 degrees, Fahrenheit pours forth, ond the boring is to be continued until water at 178 degrees is yielded. Brains tn Tertiary Times —In a p'per on the size of the brain in extinct animals, Prof. Marst, of Yale College, has brought forward the remarkable fact that ia the race ior life during past ages the survival of any pyrticular group of avimals depended on the size ot their brain as compared with that of their contemporaries of the sume class. Brains won then, as now, and the brain of animals ciushed out of existance was alwiys found to bs relatively smaller thao that of those oulliving them. Rep.acina Nerves. ~Successful ex- periments bave been made in joioing and restoring the iusctions of divided nerves, even nerves of different ftunc- tions being used to replace those parti-, ally destroyed. It is thought that even sight and hearing may be restored, after iujary to the nerves on which they de- pead, by bringing other nerves into service by artificial union. A REMARKABLE - INSTRUMENT. — Among the flints of the chalk forma- tion is occassionally found one which emits aclear musical sound when struck with another flior. Tissandier tells of a distioguished French musician, H. Buudre, who is a zealous collector o! these musical stones, and who has just succeeded in making a uoiyue “piano” from them. Inthis instrument the flints are suspended by wires above a sound- ing board, ard are played upon by two other flints. The stones number twenty-six, forming the two cromatie octaves, aod were collected with much patient labor during a period of more than thirty years. There seems to be no relation between the sizes of the stones and their tones. oe Special Notices. Tottet Casvs —Termes Apply at Redvin’s D ug ~toro. dec7 L. E.
