We groups giving choral readings. in were watching school Liummerside Saturday. and were impressed. not only with the ex- cellent interpretations of the poems recited. but also with the fact that the children themselves were clearly getting real enjoy- menl out of the exercises. The animation on their faces as they recited the lines made it obvious that they were having fun. Com- mitting verses to memory is not all sunshine. as any red-blooded. action-loving school boy or girl work is considered by many to be a rather tiresome chore. But when you can climax your study of the poem by such an exhilarat- ing experience as a choral read- ing, the work involved is con- siderably minimized. O 0 6 We do not wish to give the impression that all school work should. or can ever possibly be a labor of love. The young stu- dent must learn to square his shoulders. grit his teeth and re- solutely apply himself to the dis- agreeable tasks as they come up. when things were at their very worst. Columbus said. "Sail on, sail on!" Sir Richard Grenville stood amid the shambles of his little ship and cried. "Fight on. fight on!" School students should catch in some little degree this spirit of perseverance in the face of dlscourageme 2 because that is the stuff of which life is made. But it is nevertheless true that the more ” tini- with progress and order. you can inject into the school program. the better. in literature especially. it would seem the students should enjoy their work. The Music Fes- tival has pointed the way for some of this enjoyment. Regular classes on choral reading. say. ;Vell'y Friday, would help a great ea.
