The pickling season having come around again we are prepared as shores the date when the Island capital was founded, its streets and squares laid out, and other particulars of its early is all too scant. l\ot all, or indeed as they ought to be with the history AT THE BEGINNING. Many 'naking history in regard to which information many of our citizens are as familiar ot' their own cizy and inquirers are surprised at the barren result of their questioning. » It was in an August day of the year 1758 that Lieut., Colonel Lord Rollo, from whom Rollo Bay received its name, anchored OH Port-La-.Ioie and took over the Government of the Island from the French Govern Jr Vil-, lejon. Nearly ten years later, in J une l768, Mr. Morris, a land surveyor, was sent from Halifax to lay out the three county towns, for which plans and sketches had before been prepar- ed by Captain Holland. Some magistrates and civil ofiicers came along, with Isaac Deschamp as Super- intendent and Jonathan Binney as Judge. They built huts for them- selves in the forest and proceeded to lay out streets and squares--thirteen miles of broad streets and six squares -through which the soldiers from Fort Amherst cut down the tl'8€S. It was in June 1773 that the first Legislature of the Island was convened, composed of 18 members. ` This little legislative body, which has held an- nual sessions for 126 years, is there- fore older by some years than the United States Congress, or the Decla- ration of Independence which pre- ceded it. s . In 1798 it appears that the popu lation of the Island numbered only 4.372 souls; not many more than the number~in;the_ Island when Lord Rollo possession 40' years be- fore. iéwas in 1799 that the tid name Qf _o_hn, which the Island had long boiiie, ‘Was . changed .- to Prince Edward, and this is therefore the centennial year of Prince Edward Island, although the anniversary is passing regrettably without any cele- ,bration of its occurrence. ' The population of the city then, housed in log huts along the river bank, was estimated at fifty persons. In J une of the following year a petition was sent to King George asking for a church, a court house and 4. jul to be usual to supply our customers with everything they may rnquire in this line. _ We have a stock of. 'fu ‘ Colonial Building, as it i8 called, in which our Legis ature meets, was completed and opened in 1847. It cost about £28,000. The city was incorporated in 1855 and on 10th August of that year a. Mayor and 10 Councillors were elect- ed, Robert Hutchison, merchant, being the first Mayor. LORD SELK.lRK’S COLONY. Lord Selkirk is described as “a Sco chman, keen-eyed, lean and tall, over six f-et high.” In 1803 he despatched three vessels with 800 Highlanders on bo ird to gn estate he had secured in Prince Ed- ward Island.
