Some interesting figures showing the strength and cost of maintaining the armies of the leading nations of Kurope were re- cently published. It appears that the peace footing ef the German army at the present time is 427,274 men, of all branches of the serviee, and the war footing 1,329,- 600 men, the fourth and fifth field bat- taliona of the Landstrum excluded. The cost in time of peace ameunts to about £16,500,000 sterling a year. In times of peace the French army ‘numbers £443,014 men, and requiring ‘£21,600,000 a year to sustain it; while, exelusive of reserves, the war foot- ing is 1,295,0@0 men. The Russian army’s peace strength is 7115009 men, eosting an- | nually £27,00°,000; and the war feoting, exclusive cf the Asiatic and Caucasian jforces, 1,376,800 mon. Austria's peace trepgth is 268,691; cest of mainten- Jance, £10,500,000; war strength, 860,000 Italy, peace atrength, 221,594; ecest £8,500,000, war strength, | 900,008. Great Britain, peace strength, including the forces in India and the Cel- onies, 196,000; militia, 126,000 ; reserves, '42,000. The cest of the British army is jabout £15,000,000 a year. Per man the ‘annual cost stands about as follows :— ‘Germany, £34; Austria, £35 ; Italy, £36 ; men. £110. The maintenance of these large military bodies is a great drain on the resources of the countries which | waintain them. Yet the cest can- ‘not be otherwise regarded than absolutely necessary. Past efforts in the direction of | bringing about a redgetion in the strength of standing armies have not been very suc- | cessful; and judging from the present out- | look there does not seem to exist a bright ‘prospect of the Great Powers ef Europe |being relieved at an early day from the ‘financial burJen which the maintenance of a large military force necessitates. i lnc lagi The Czar’s Visit to Mescow. A Moseow despatch says the Emperor and Empress arrived there on the 30th ult, and had an enthusiastic weleome. On reaching the city they proeseded on feot from the palase to the cathedral, an im- mense crowd chearing them lustly all the way. The visit to the Cathedral was fei- lowed by a reeeption at the Kremlin. To- day 20,000 troops will be passed in review lat the camp, and Sunday 1s fixed fora pil- 'grimmage to the convent of St. Sergius. ‘The Czar said: ‘‘ After passing through the great affliction which fell upon the Im- perial family and ali Russia, I esteem my- self happy to visit the original eapital of the Empire. Moscow testifies now, as formerly that the Czar and people ferm one harmon- ious, solid whele.” A St. Petersburg despatch says it is stated thay the Czar’s jeurney to Moscow indieates a ehange of policy in the pan- Slavish direction, that the journey is not conneeted with his coronation, but simply due to the Gzar’s wish to visit the ancient capital and de homage before its holy treasures, Se A Sewrxc Macuarse that Brown cannot — i ae Great Britain ‘sc6ems te be grewing worse from week to a ee VoL o=N0 Sn | Wom to Parronize.—In all towns | where tradesmen exist, there is the real ‘and the begus business man.
