THE CANADIAN ALMANAC, It was inthe year 1846 that the firat issué of the Almanac was published, snl every year since then for morethan balt a century it has regularly made its appear - ance, and been we'comed by business aud literary men alike as an invaluatle assist- ant aud store of information. On turning over the pages of the issue for 1899,now before us, one is struck Ly the evidences of the growth and prosperity of our coun~ trv shown by the increase in size of the Almanac, which has grown from a pamph- l+t of about 100 pages to a handsome book of 576 pages. Among the contents of the book which are especially veluable are: Customs Taritf, Post Office Guide, and Directories o'f various persons and offirials, all of which are brougut up to date, while the articles on the British Army and Navy, and Forms of Government throughout the world wre interesting and reliable. A fea- ture that appeals particularly to all who are interested in the current history of the world isthe Historical Diary, which is carefully prepared each year, and gives an excellent resume Of the year’s history. Altogether we think the publishers are to be congratulated, upon the apperance of tue 52ud issue ef the Canadian Almanac. Price, 25 cents. The Copp, Clark Co, Limited, Toronto. Intelligent Interest. Cooxsutre, Que., Dec 1—Hon. George Foster addressed an organization meeting of eastern townships conservatives here t —jay and raid there could be no intelli- gent nterest in the politics of the country unless tbe people read aud studied a little and talked with each othera good deal. The way to govern the country was to get inteligent ballots. When the Iiberal- conservative party fell in 1896, it fell in the pursuit and defence of good constituti- onal principles. A party that was brave enough and strong enough to goto the country s#gainst¢great odds and in defence of well-known constitutional principles, was a party which would not keep down long, it was aparty which died in the hope ofa full and glorious resurrection, It was decided to establish reading rooms in populated centres for the educa.ion of young men in the principles of the leberal- conservative party. SS = mews oan aes SUCCESSFUL MEN MANY OF THEM ARE HANDICAPPED WITH CATARRHAL DISEASES. Dr. A.W.CHASE COMES TO THEIR AID. Success in life is almost impossible for a man with bad breath. Nobody wants to do business with him. No- body wants to associate with him. He is handicapped everywhere. Offen- sive breath comes from catarrh; some- times from caterrh of the stomach, sometimes of the lungs, sometimes of the head, nose, and throat. It is from catarrh somewhere, and catarrh is an- other name for uncleanness, Many men understand this, and make every effort to cure it, but it is be- yond the reach of ordinary practice. No self-respecting man can ignore catarrh. If he has it in any form he makes constant effort to be rid of it. There is something about the man- ner of life and the climate of Canada that seems to breed diseases of the mucous membrane. Medical science ordinarily doesn’t try to cure catarrh; it “relieves” it: but Dr. Chase has been curing catarrh for over thirty years, and his name is blessed by thousands who have erasp of this insidious disease.
