Ghost Haunts i - Shut-in-Island (By The Canadian Press) HALIFAX, Aug. 2'1 -- Shut-In Island, a rounded. barren mass rising from St. Margaret's Bay off Glen Margaret, is haunted by a plaintive little ghost. At least, that's what superstitiris fisherfolk say. One afternoon the story 8095. a fisherman and his family visited the island to pick berries. One oi the children, a four year old girl, wandered away. She was ncverl found. despite an exhaustive search by the distracted parents A dense fog that evening hamper- ed efforts of a searahinz Dali! summoned from the mainland. Although the child's body WM never recovered, her family con- eluded she had ranch into a pond on tho island. The girl had not been baptized, according to some fishermen. so her ghost still haunts the district. Occasionally it i.‘ said, fishermen passing the island on foggy autumn nights hear the mournful, childish call. Below will be found a brief syn- opsis of telegraphic reports received at the Head Office of tlic Bank of Montreal from its Branches. The Branch Managers have complete and intimate knowledge of each local situation and are in close touch with crop conditions in all sections of the districts mentioned. GENERAL Harvesting is now general over ing has commenced in the southern and central area as well as in some northern districts Heavy hail damage is reported in area of sou- thern Alberta and over a. consider- able territory in central Saskatche- wan. The coarse grain crop is practically a total failure in exten- sive areas of centra land southern Saskatchewan and in south-central and southwest Manitoba, and in these areas feed for livestock pre- sents an acute problem. In Quebec Province average yields of barley and oats are in prospect and roots are progressing satisfactorily except in some parts of the Eastern Town- ships. In Ontario harvesting of spring grains is nearing completion. with oats and barley giving better than average yields. In the Mari- time Provinces, potatoes and ap- ples show satisfactory progress and good yelds. In the Maritime Pro- vinces, potatoes and apples show satisfactory progress and good grain yields seem assured, except in Nova Scotia where they will likely be below average. In British Colum- bia most crops are in good condi- tion, and satisfactory yields are in prospect. PRAIRIE PROVINCES Alberta. Northeastern Area-Cutt- ing is well advanced but, practically no threshing has been done. The crop is below average. Alberta Southeastern area -— Ap- proximately '75 per cent, of the grain has been cut. The crop is light and pasturage poor. Alberta Western Area-In the north all crops are very promising and harvesting is general. In the south harvesting is well advanced and yields vary greatly, Some low grade wheat is reported. The sugar beet crop is good. Saskatchewan Northern Area - Wheat is 25 per cent. cut, with in- dications that yields will be lower- ed as a result of dry weather. Coarse grains are patchy and will be light. Saskatchewan Southern Area — Cutting is rapidly nearing comple- tion, with the whcat crop very light and coarse grains largely cut for fodder. The feed situation is causing concers over a large terri- tory. Manitoba-Jrhreshlng is under way. Good yields are indicated over the Portage plains, along the Red River Valley, and in northern dis- tricts. Elsewhere crops are only fair to poor, with total failure over a large area in the southwest. The feed situation is very serious in poor crop areas. ‘ PROVINCE OF QUEBEC Harvesting of oats and barley is proceeding under favourable con- ditions; average yields are in pros- pect in all sections.
