A magnificent and exceedingly large meeting of the electors of the 5th District of King’s County was hold in the Public Hall, Georgetown last night and a unanimous and uncompromising sentiment was expressed in support of tho Government. The Premier, Hon. J. A. Mathiesen and his col- league, Mr. Ii. J. McLellan, were given a right royal reception, The meeting had been called by the Liberal candidates, Messrs. Peter Mc- Court and Horatio Nelson, who might with profit to themselves have remain- _ed at home for all the interest that- was taken in them. Mr. J. J. Hughes. M. P., was in at- tendance to give what little assistance lie could to his half-hearted friends. On motion Mr. D. B. McLaren was unanimously appointed Chairman. When the Government candidates rose to address the meeting the au- dience spontaneously broke into a tremendous and prolonged uproar of applause, which proved beyond the shadow of a. doubt, if proof were need- ed, the_ very high esteem in which they are held in the district. It was obvious that the Opposition candi- dates have not the ghost of a chance and Mr. McCourt, who ventured to repeat the malignant slanders propa- gated by the Patriot in regard to the oats was hootod by the audience and openly rebuked for his disgraceful and eontemptibie behaviour. The au- dience refused to listen to his tirade and blushingly lie had to abandon the subject. The Liberal candidates will fight shy of the district in future. The first speaker was Mr. McCourt. who opened his speech with is lengthy in- troduction. the gist of which was that he realized the embarrasing difficulty of his position in oposing the candi- dates representing the Government. He went on to deal with the Public Works of the province and began by criticising the Roads Act, and before he left the subject he reluctantly nd- mitted that the roads of to-day are in a far better condition than ever they were before. He made. the wake of his colleague, but benefitting left the oats alone. The Premier was next called upon. The applause on his rising was hearty ami overwhelming ,and there was no mistaking the sincerity of the enthu- siasm of the reception given to him. Before he proceeded he was present- ed with u. beautiful bouquet by an equally beautiful young lady of 8 or 0 years. His address was characteris- tically eloquent and was punctuated by rounds of applause. He gave a thorough and comprehensive review of the political situation as it had been developed from the day the Gov- ernment took office in 1911, with an unprecedented burden of debt, up to the present tinie of solvency and pros- perity. He dealt fully with the sub- sidy question and showed how little Mr. Hughes had to do with the secur- ing of it. The Premier pointed out that in 1907, when Mr. Lefurgey. one of the members for Prince Edward Island, moved a resolution that there should be allowed to this Province an additional sum of $28,000 Mr. Hughes voted against it. Was that the con- duct that would have been expected of one who professed to have the inter- ests of the country at heart? the Pre- mier asked. If Mr. Hughes wanted to do anything for the province, then was the time' to have donc it when he had the opportunity so exercise his influence (if he had any) on Sir Wil- frid Laurier. In regard to the subsidy tho Premier pointed out that the amount oi' $100 000 was assured to liiiglies opcncd his niouth on the sub- showed how the enormous debt oi’ $1,072,000 which the present Govern- ment assumed in 1911 was computed, and pointed out flint in the last three and a halt years, in addition to all the Public Works constructed that debt had been reduced by $80,000. During the past year the Government contributed $21,000 to the war, niet other uiiforsccu expenditures, and R. L. BORllEN. The Patriot having exhausted its supply of false accusations against -tho Mathicson Government has. by the lnnefs dmgmcei h° sensibly ` through the aid of an anonymous cor- respondent, inventcd one, namely, that the gauge of the I’. E. island rail- way is not to be widened as promised, to conform with the standard gauge of the Car Ferry and the mainland railway system. As proof, it states that a wooden shed is i1o\v being built at Cape Traverse, whore freight will be transferred front mainland to Is- land cars and vice versa. And to all this it adds that "our labouring men at Charlojtetown and othcl points who have had employment at this 0Tl`AWA_, Sept. 9-Telegram reed. Th_e allegation oi_ the news work ure to be left uncinploycd, while lntcrcolonial labourers will bc brought over to Cape Traverse and givcn thc employment there." ’i`lils fabrication is repeated, in another and more vir- ulent form in yesterdays Patriot. Not because there was any doiilit about the matter, but to settle it at once and officially, The Guardian ycs- terday tclegraphcd the Prime Minis- ter stating the P:itriot’s allegations both about the railway :ind labourers and received the above reply: In addition to this assurance from _Sir Robert Borden, it is wcll known l that during thc post your or more all the new sleepers laid on thc P. ld. Is- werc long sleepers, such as :irc uscd only on wiilc gauge roads and that surveyors have already been at work laying plans i'or the standardizing oi' the railway. And so this last Patriot fnlirication will be nddcd to the nizilly that it has invciitcrl and clrculzitcd during the 'present cninpziign. 'l`lic clectors througliout thc Proviiive will form their own coiiclusions regarding a party which finds it iie<~c.\:.snry to bols- ter tip its riiusc with such absurdly ridiculous cliiirgcs as thc Patriot and its low noisy minions have indulgcd in to influence thc clcctoraitc.
