HUNTER"S' CORNER s The Guardian Page 7 ; Wildgeese Have Suffered . 1 In Late Sprin The heaviest spring lflight of mldgecse over a long period of tears is bezi rig to filter north- ward. old timers tell me it has mg g long. long time since they my so many geese here in the "mug. It's passing strange that M, the toughest spring we have had for over a quarter century a recnrd I IGCIC should choose to arrive earlier then usu- .1 In this colurnnist'a memory I hate to go back 31 years to find , gpring its equal in ice and snow conditions. I commenced spring palrtlll in March. 1929 and this is the first spring since then I have mi neon on the rounds with the ex- rwnon of a partial layoff in 1952 during my change of status from Federal to Provincial game war- Oil dhmre the roads have opened up i have made trips throughout the muntryside contacting old time observers and key undercover men Rho kept me pretty well informed as to feed and poaching condi- tions while I was on active. duty. II IS the general consensus of opin- liln that me geese suffered more horn starvation and illegal shoot- .n: this spring then on any season nninn memory. I didn't realize mat the geese were so hard press- oil for food until I began to circu- law among the farmers. There pas practically no open water for uceks later their arrival and per- mriir snow storms shut off their food ordinarily gleaned from the lipids - stubble and last season's pnialo acreages. For days they sat innitlled together out on the sea we nailing for rations to come up. NOT SAFE it wasn't safe for them to hang out around the few open channels. From what I can gather in some districts the season was wide open .- in others just the usual sniping tactics that have occurred every past spring and will in all prob- ability will continue in future spring seasons. According to reliable informa- tion poachers had a field day in the Orwell - China Point - llarnscliffe - and-Portree Creek mangle. For a week or more af- ter the geese arrived there was no open water except at Orwell. ri.ougheran'a) and Portree Creek. The distance between the two points is approximately three mil- on as the crow flies. when the geese were driven out of portree they flew across Orwell Cove to Brush Wharf and thence up tfie Orwell River to Lougheran's. Farmers who vs at The Cove told me it was pathetic. The geese nnuld fly to Lougheran's and in if) or 15 minutes would again ap- pear in sight scattered all over the skyline and honking their heads off. Toward the end their hrcasis were V shaped - like troughs as one fanner comment- rd -- and the birds were so weak i'1t'y had to alight on the snowy IIEIGS between nights. One obser- ver remarked: "I never in my hie saw so many single goose fly-' in: hither and yon searching for lost mates" Thorelll be a lot of hrnods missing from the return ilutht south this fall. OPEN POACHING In case some readers of the Col- umn will get the idea i'm jump- ing to conclusions I'll relate an int-ldcnt that happened at Longhor- an's. After the geese came they frequented several open holes un- der Jimmie Hught-s' share. One 9 Breakup afternoon a maroon Oltavrolet ear stopped on the Trans-Canada nigh. way opposite Lougheran's. A nun lot out with a shotgun. skirted the edge of the marsh and under cover of I spruce thicket can out .. a flock of geese in an open not. and shot three. He carried the time held by the necks over his shoulder, threw them in the right hand door ol the car. plaead tho gun on the seat and qulta non. cbalently walked around the rear of the car and got In behind us; wheel. He knew he was under ob- servation and that there was a fair car traffic on the move but didn't make any "jack rabbit" start but appeared quite calm. cool and col- lected and pulled way in a or. trial manner. That appeared to be the gener- al pattern regarding gooae stront- lng in this area. On Saturday April 13th it was an ordalnary spring day in the city but out in the country, it was blustery. During periods of snow squalls visibility was cut to a few yards. A heavy concentration of geese In the fields in the Seal River area were hammer- ed ail day. Shots were heard ev- ery hour of the morning and after- noon. It was quite evident the poachers had no worry over be- ing interrupted in their illegal ac- tivitics. Many are asking: "Why was this allowed to happen?” If three regiments of soldiers are holding a line and the centre regiment shoulder arms and march out the MASTER CLEANERS us ruzaot sonar FOB PROMPT SERVICE 5535'. Such a situa- tion was not unexpected but who made any effort toward taking steps to forestall such a happen- lng? It would appear as if human welcomed and acted like a bunch of chil- dren let out of school. FEW CONSERVATIONISTS Hunters have talked to me quite freely and admitted their inten- tion of getting a few geese this spring. I have also been told they were in good condition when they 'arrived but in a week or ten days were so thin they weren't worth shooting. One gunner stated they were so thin they'd hardly fall out of the air when shot it it was blow- ing ha,rd. I asked him why any- one would want to shoot geese in the spring. "Well" was his reply "they've had spring shooting in Nova Scotla. New Brunswick and Newfoundland for years and its about time we had our Innings. The few geese I shot won't be missed." There is a closed season on ml- gratory birds in both Canda and the States during the spring but it is common knowledge that in the sister Maritime provinces en- forcement has been pretty lax but that is no reason why this province should follow suit. incidentally. a hunter could tell a game warden he shot some geese out of season pand Mint could the warden do about it supposing it was true. Take him to court and he'd deny it and state he was only joking so what? As I see it at the mo- ment the work of a lifetime was pretty well wasted - it floated down the river over night. About the only conclusion one can draw from this state of affairs is that the majority of hunters in this pro- vince are not in favour of a strict. new to the line, game law enforce- ment policy. Bock Stretch (Continued from Page 6) ll00.000 for sixty achcduicd har- nt-ss race meets. Opening date will be May 20. when half mile dahaes will he raced. After that on Wed- ncsday and Saturday nights racing ll" be continued until Remem- hrance Day. November 11th. There will be accomodation for 150 horses and everything will be done to make the programs attractive to the public and satisfactory to the hnncmen. The Charlottetown track has be put in splendid condition by a lot of hard work. The man responsible for the oval and in fact the entire plant this year is Everett Hastings. and II the Island were searched over a better man could not be inund for the job. Yesterday over I dozen horses were working miles in 3:00 quite easily. There is nice looting and just enough clay to make training enjoyable for the horses and the real thing for leg- stng them up. Some sixty horses are siabled there now but it is ex- peeled that when racing gets no- rlt-: way that number will be in- creased to 150. While no program has been released we understand that race fans will see as good racing as any in the past years and plenty of opportunity to watch the horses i naction. NEW OWNER A new owner.
