Poplars and willows have been planted wherever possible, to keep the dust away and to break the force of any explosion. Nitro-glycerine and dlnishtl cordite are nowmade in the old works. Quinton hills are held in reserve for emer- gencies. Cordite, it will be remembered, consists of nitro-glycerine and socalled in- soluble gun-cotton, both dissolved in ace- tone with the addition of a small quantity of vaseline. The brown prismatic powder has_ replaced the old black powder and cordite has, within the last ten years been applied for arms of all kinds. The waste acids from the gun-cotton manufacture were formerly sold. They are now regenerated in the nitric acid factory which ranks among the very best of its kind. A small quantity of conimer- cial oil of vitrol is added to the charges of the stills. "Although the waste acid contains about li) per cent. of water, the whole acid regenerated has a specific gravity of 1.5. averaging between 95 and 96per cent. of inonohydrate. Even the acid collected in the absorbing towers goes back to the stills. The acetone _ fac- tory hns been much enlarged lately. Ace- tone is obtained by heating acetone of lime in cast-iron stills. The acetone .splits into water, carbon ate acid, and acetone. The crude acetone is collected in special coolers: purified. from empyreuinutis con- stituents. acid and tarry products, and the dust of carbonate of lime. the acetone is icrlistillcll in large coluinii stills. and obtained in :i very high state of purity.
