To retute the reasoaing of such persons, it is ouly necessary to refer to the mauner in which she manufacture of Beet-root Sugar has been encouraged in France, aad the good effects that have resulted from such encouragement. The first Napoleon, seeing what benefits would scrue from the protection of that branch of industry, imposed large protective duties upon foreign Sugar, in order to enable the home producer to successfully compete with the im- porter from foreign countries. He was derided for bik attempt to establish the Beet Sugar trade by such meaus ; but the protective policy sateodueed by him has triumphed in « most decisive manner. Aé the manufacture became, little by little, established, the duties on ‘oreign Mr. Eprtor: A disappointed man is sometimes an amusing, but more frequently a mischievous creature. He is out of humour with everyone,—the times with him are sadly out of joint,—he looks at the world and its doings through a medium which distorts and discolours everything. He lays the blame of his failure at every door but his own, and he speaks of his fancied foes in any terms but choice ones. Such a man is the editor of the Summerside Progress. He has taken it into his head that he would have been made Queen’s Printer were it not for the oppo- sition of certain parties whom he designates old Liberals ;"’ and he consequently, in the last issue of the Progress, makes a furious attack on them. The western editor has in his pects for the purpose, being comparatively unin- habited, and yet porsessing a healthy elimate, a soil capable of successful cultivation, and an abundanee of fuel and water. It appears that an additional Hight bonse is required in order to render navigation safe in the vicinity, and it is roposed to give employment to the conviets in the erection of thie and the buildings in which they are afterwards to be confined. There are also excellent quarries of marble on the island, which would afford usual employment to those sent thither. Itis thought that in this way the island might become settled and its resources developed much wnore rapidly than would be other- wise done, while the results to the convicts them- selves would be highly beneficial. In Anstratia this has been found to be the case; many of the deseendants.ef those formerly transported to Botany Bay have beeome not only wealthy but respectable and goud inembers of society.
