The past year proved very unfavor- able to the ship-building trade of the United Kingdom, and a large decrease from last year’s production is report- ed. The total numberof vessels built in 1885, according ww the Glasgow Herald, was 614, with a total tonnage of 540,282. Asa proof of the great depression which has exhisted in the trade this year, it is stated that the falling off since last year has been 710,- 000 tons, while the decrease, compared with 1883, has been 710,000 tons. The relative position of the British ports in this industry is shown by the tollowing table giving last year’s pro- | ' | ' duction :— No of Gross Name port. vesse!s tons.
