CORRESPONDENCE, THE LICENSE LAW. To the Editor of the Examiner. Dear Str,—Some few months ago | wrote you a letter describing how the vice of drunkenness had been dealt with in Sweden —particularly in Gothenburg. The plan was adopted after temperance societies, high tariffs, &c., had signally failed of pro- ducing anything but outrageous smuggling. { then pointed out the main features of the plan, all conducing to render drinking an expensive luxury—firstly, by altering the pint license to about two gallons; secondly, by reducing the numberof taverns to about one-third their number, and fixing their situation to where they might be supposed to be useful; thirdly, by putting each sep. arate tavern up to yearly auction, instead of having a fixed payment for a license— whereby the one-third produced a consider- ably larger revenue to the city than the whole previous number. Every tavern- keeper thus became, in self-defence, a de- termined enemy ofillicittrade. Of course, they are under stringent supervision, so as to prevent adulteration; any such infrac-~ tion of the law being punishable with in» stant loss of license Hitherto I have only been able to point to the theory, and to state, by hearsay, that it has been very successful; but I am now in possession of statistics which confirm the theory. The following table shows the the decrease of drunkenness, during the last twelve years that the system has been in Operation, The years 1855-56 show the rate of intoxication before it was intro- duced — Tag ice in Charlottetown Harbor is rapidly | \ i i! | g prepared for the work of the Farewets dinner was Society, in St. | i Hall, this (Monday) evening. | ** Nonpariel, ’’ New Glasgow, ; CHARLOTTETOWN | Awe, Sort TR ~ - NEW BRICK BUILDING, > no 2 : Prinee Street The Subscriber. in returning thanks past favors, respectfully intimates to his numerous customers and the public generally, that he has completed a large ‘NEW BRICK BUILDING!
