[Special By TELEPHONE.|] Axpout three o'clock this morning, fire was discovered in the store of Mr. George Garrett, Stanley Bridge. It rapidly gain- ed headway, and, in a very short time, had complete possession of the building, whence it spread to Mr. Garrett’s dwelling house, adjoining, The fire spread rapidly, frus- trating all attempts to quench it, and burnt s» fiercely that the shop and house were soon completely destroyed. Nothing was saved from the shop excepting the safe; some furniture was saved from the house. Indeed, such slight warning had the inmates of the breaking out of the fire, that Mrs. Garrett barely escaped with her life. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Garrett, whose loss will be severe. A Protest. | Srr,—I notice a small army of laborers and teams have been engaged for several days in cutting down that part of Truck Street, between Weymonth and Cumber- land—the clay thus excavated being deposited on Hillborough Street, between Kent and Grafton. Possibly the authority under whose direction this work is being carried on, could justify it, if called upon | to do so, but there are many who cannot see its utility. I do not know that either Street will benefit to any extent by the large expenditure which is being incurred. Both were ina fairly good state before— much better than the streets in many other parts of the city at present. When some of the present Civic officials were in autho- rity a few years ago, that portion of Hillsborough Street upon which the clay 1s now being dumped, received so much attention that the fact became a matter for public comment at that time. While many of the streets stand in absolute need of immediate repair, and our sidewalks are a reproach to the city, I protest against our money being squandered in the manner above indicated. Russia intends to keep her navy up to the standard set by the other European pow- ers. Orders have been given for the con- struction of two new ironclads superior to anything that the Czar ever has had. They will be named the Emperar, Nicholas and the Gangorite. The chief constructor of the Russian navy furnishes the plans. Lord Salisbury, in a speech at Mile End, on the 17th inst., told his hearers that they must not expect the day would ever come when the colonies would become a _ federa- tion in the same sense as the United States, bat he hoped that, by a common agree- ment, the present difficulties would be re- moved. Regarding Irish affairs, he said it was appalling to think that years hence their sons and grandsons might still be dis- cussing the Irish problem, with nothing new to say on the subject. > —-_ +. Odds and Ends. Man will give ten words to the expres- sion of his joy, and fifty to lament his sor- rows. It was a constable who remarked pleas- antly that he had an attachment for his victim. There is one Chinamen in San Francisco who bids fair to become a celebrated mu- sical character. His name is Sing Hi. An umbrella that has done service for forty years is owned by a Stroudsburg, Pa., man, and still protects him from the rain. There is a young lady in Virginia who can write two love-letters at once—one with each hand. Thus does nature strive to accommodate herself to the evolution of the modern flirt. New York, July 18.—At the July meet- ing of the New York yacht club to-day it was resolved not to put up a special cup for competition in the match race with the Valkyrie. All the club events will be open to her. Earl Dunraven will be noti- fied. Lonpon, July 18.—The police authori- ties acknowledge to-day that they have no clue whatever to the perpetrator of the latest Whitechapel murder, and he has disappeared as completely as after the previous outrages. The excitement over the crime continues as intense as ever, and the police ore roundly denounced by the people and many English journals for their failure to trace the horrible mystery. Lonpon, July i8.—Matthew Harris, M. P. testified before the Parnell Commission to-day, that Eagan and Breunan left France when they joined the land league. Dr. Charles Tanner, Nationalist M. P., for the middle division of Cork, testified he had always been opposed to boycotting of women and children, though he endea- vored to get land grabbers bbycotted. He had been boycotted by Tories in Cork, who had iaduced many of his patients to leave him. He said he had always spoken against outrages. _—_———__—_— ee + -- Tobacco Chewers Among Women. A well known physician, while walking down the street with a friend, remarked, a patient of mine lives in that house who is dying—an idolized wife—beyond all help, and tobacco chewing has killed her. Why, Doctor ! what do you mean? I mean this: her husband is literally steeped in tobacco juice, and the insensible perspiration from his body has become so mond aris 5 with nicotine as to be a deadly poison. His wife, before I was called, had absorbed enough of the poisou so that no human power can save her; and even he will, 1 believe, end his days in torture from some kind of skin disease. The skin is really the most wonderful and important organ of the human body. Night and day, every hour of our lives, it is filtering out from the blood useless or poisonous debris. If it stopped work even for twenty-four hours in this or any case, death would ensue. You can imagine, then, what it means for a deli- cate, sensitive-skinned woman to sleep in a warm bed night after night with an inveterate tobaceo chewer. The skin and mucous mem brane of some persons is much more sensitive than others. A person who in sum- mer is subject to hay fever, tanned or burned skin, in winter te colds, bronchitis, chapped hands, or chilblains, ought always (whether at home or travelling) to keep a bottle of John- son’s Anodyne Liniment near at hand. Dilute the liniment with water and gently bathe, or moisten a cloth with it and lay upon the irri tated skin if very sensitive; then wash it clean in the morning with Castile soap and water. If a person who takes cold quickly, or is pre disposed to bronchitis or catarrh, or exposed to any poison, irritating to the skin or mucus surfaces, which might tend to cause consump tion will every night, before retiring, bathe the chest and throat with Johnsoa’s Anodyne Liniment and, before dressing in the morning, rub the whole body smartly with a coarse towel, slightly dampened, and then wiped dry, we believe they never would have pu! monary troubles, or disease from defective working of the skin. LS. Johnson & Co., Boston, Mass., will send a phamplet, free, describing other uses for this old household remedy, now eighty years old. Odds and Ends. A gipsy fortune teller informed a Penn- sylvania girl that if she was not married by the time she was 21 it would not be her fault. A marriage license was issued at Pitts- burg last Tuesdey to a couple whose ages foot up 135 years. Both have been married before. When you find a man whe hates news- papers you want to forgive him, because his conduct made it necessary for the news- papers to hate him.
