Hanington, mate of the “Mary J. Cooke.” The decased came te ‘his death by being struck—while on a voyage from Para to Brazil bya broken spar. The blow was so severe that he never spoke afterwards and lived only till next day. He was buried at sea. The deceased was brother of Mr, George L. Hanington and half brother of Miss Ida Schurman, both of the Point du Chene House. They recently met with a severe trial in the burning of that hotel, as all their family souvenirs and ornaments were destroyed by the fire. This fresh trial will be a heavy blow [jaly 13 2i to them. A despatch from Beckenried, Switzerland says that nearly all the cultivated land in that district has been ruined by storms and a land slip. A despatch from Durban on the 9th says that a great battle was fought between the forces of Cetewayo and those of Oham. The latter chief was captured. News has been received in Paris that China has appointed M. Makien, a Euro- peanized diplomat, to negotiate with M. Tricon, French Munister, relative to Ton- ,quin affairs. The Canadian marksmen at Wimbledon have made a good start. News by steamer con- firms the telegrams that the Congress at Aroquipa has declared for peace. The ‘‘Standard’s” correspondent at Paris says that in order to secure influence over the canal the British Government will find the capital for the new canal company, which is to pay only small interest. An Australian despatch says that both houses of the Victorian Parliament have unanimously voted an address to the Queen, urging the annexing and the es- tablishment of a protectorate over New Guinea and other Pacific islands, and offer- ing to share the expense of such action. A letter to General Lynch, dated Farma, July 7, reports that Colonel Urriola dis- persed a number of Monteneros on the 4th inst., in Conception, killing 75 of them and losing only one of his men. On the 6th inst., he encountered another party at Pacao, killing six men, among them Col. Rios, sub-prefect of Anja. The French astronomers sent to Caroline Island, in the South Pacific, to study the solar eclipse of May 6, have arrived at San Francisco. They report finding a red star, which itis believed will prove a new dis- covery. The eclipse lasted 5 minutes and 32 seconds. They noticed several new features in the corona, chiefly a white prominence supposed to be vapor or white clouds. Advices dated June 6th, from Gaboon, the capital of the French colony of that name, on the west coast of Africa., state that the French commandant there has arbitrarily searched English merchants, and fined those having arms in their pos- session, and has interfered with the schools of American missionaries, refusing to rmit the teaching of any language but Teich The pauper emigrants returned to Ire- land by order of the American authorities on the steamers Furnessia and Spain were landed at Queenstown yesterday. All accounts agree in describing them as a wretched class of people. One family, con- sisting of man, wife and five children, were left lying on the wharf for three hours before the officials, who were not advised of their coming, provided for their wants. The Masonic Grand Lodge of Canada is now in session at Ottawa, The Grand Master's report shows that from 1867 to 1875, the Grand Lodge expended in benevo- lence $32,886, and from 1876 to 1882, both years inclusive, $71,396 52, or nearly $10,- 200 a year has been expended in aiding those requiring assistance doring the last seven years.
