The Veterans were at a disadvantage in that many of them lacked practice. Still they played a plucky game. The match will be repeated Saturday next, when the Veterans hope to have astronger team. J. Wadman, A. B., the children occupying the galleries of the church aad conducting the singing. The sermon was exceedingly appropriste to the occasion, abounding in beautiful illustration, and was delivered with unusual! fervor and eloquence. We are proud of Mr. Wadman as a native of the Island, and welcome him as a valuable acquisition to our staff of city clergymen. He comes to us from the church in Fredericton to assume the pastorate of the Second Methodist Church here. Robt. B. Beath, of Philadelphia, was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, Thursday evening. It is stated at Berlin that Prof. Zupub- litz, who committed suicide on Thursday, killed himself because he had drawn the death lot in the so-called American duel. A special states it was reported in Mon- terrey on the 27th, that the Spanish Minis- ter to Mexico had been recalled and a seri- ous rupture between the two countries is possible. Henry Welch and wife, and Miss Alice Swartz were killed at the Frakering Cross- ing of the Pennsylvania Railroad, near Lancaster, on Friday, while trying to cross the track ahead of an express train. Late estimates place the liabilities of the Ward Iron Company, Cleaveland, O., at $360,000, while the available assets are said to be less than $5,000. The wife of James Ward is said to have property to meet all liabilities, Over one hundred persons in attendance at a lawn party at Jobet, Lll., last evening were made seriously ill by eating ice cream, which it is believed contained poison. None of the victims have died, though several are in a critical condition. Count Kalnaky had an interview on Thursday with Count Von Bulow, the Prussian minister. Certain importance is attached in Vienna to the cordial recep- tion by Emperor William of Count Kalnaky. The latter has received free from the Em- peror the decoration, Lord Carlingford, the President of the Council, stated in the House of Lords, on the 27th, that the Government had no in- tention of enforcing quarantine against ship- ping arriving at English ports, as it was thought impossible to establish an absolute quarantine system. He said medical in- spection would be adopted. A duel with pitchforks took place at High Grove, Nelson county yesterday, bet veen two farm laborers, Daniel Wilkes, colored, and John McDougal, white. They got into a quarrel and decided to fight Wilkes procured a long-handled, two prong- ed fork and McDougal a short-handled one with four prongs.
