CHARLOTTETOWN lly Thornton MOTMOT PRUNES His TAIL In vanity is little gain: Contempt most likely will obtain. -Old Mother Nature. Motniot. called King of the Woods. is beautiful. Indeed, it is because of his beauty that some folks call him King of the Woods for there is nothing else kingly about him. Now all too often people who are beautiful to look at are vain of their fine appear- ance and think more about their fine looks than about anything else. They want to be admired and envied by all who see them. and are happiest only when they are showing off and attracting the attention of others. Motmot has it very beautiful g DtiowWw.'c-omttJF contract Bridge By Josephine Culbertson the Electoral E.-.e3oeooorc:cio-:-otaaocioooincecticeo... FREAK HANDS with a one-bid and go slowly up- ward. or start with a shutout bid of some degree. or. finally. should even pass at his first opportunity and "await developments" 4wcll. any group of experts would split. up into three distinct factions on this point! It is not possible to prove the superiority of one method over another - the con- ditions which exist. involving the reactions of the other three play- ers, must be weighed each time on their merits. However, while conceding all this, it is nevertheless valid to point out that the sort of bidding South. a good card-player. made his doubled contract easily enough, getting East into I coup which ggggxi at W3 W. lumen) cost. It is especially lovely when the sun shines on it and it seems as if every feather in it catches a sunbeam the way a diamond does. or sometimes a drop of wat- er. and like these turns the sun- beam into sparkling color. Only Jacamai-. his near neighbor. has as beautiful a coat. Perhaps Motmot is a little jealous. People who are vain are very apt to be jeal- ous. Hc has no reason to be jeal- ous, at least no more reason than Jacam-ar has to be jealous of him. Of course he may not be jealous at all, but he surely does like to draw attention to himself. Yes, sir. he surely does. And he does it with his tail. Motimot's tail is unusually long for a bird of his size, the two middle feathers being much long- er than the other feathers of the tail. Jacamar's tail is not nearly as long. You would think Mot- mot would be satisfied with this. but. 'it appears that he isn't. Yes, sir. it appears that he isn't. Just why he isn't satisfied with those beautiful long tail feathers just as Mother Nature has given them to him nobody knows. but ap- parently he wants them different. You know how gardeners prune bushes and trees by cutting the branches here and there to make them into different shapes. Well. that is just what Motinot does to his tail so that it will look un- like an-y other tails. He was do- ing this now as Mrs. Motmot look- ed on. You know the tail or wing feather of a bird has a long rib or quill down the middle, bigger at the upper end and growing smaller all the way to the tip. Growing out from opposite sides of this are what look like tiny feathers. They grow very. very close together and are quite stiff, ANNOUNCEMENT Prince Edward Island Mutual Fire all possible developments. a. five- diamorid shutout had more to re- commend it than any other action. Insurance Moinoi. called King of the Woods. is beautiful ther. is quite stiff and firm. That is no the air cannot get through it when the bird is lying. Motmot, or King of the Woods if you like that better, had twist- ed hia head around so as to study his tail. He had pruned the low- er part of each of the two long middle feathers by picking off from the rib or quill the tiny fea- thers growing out from the sides. so that for an inch or so there was only bare rib. But he. hadn't done this to the very end. He had been careful not to in any way disturb the tiny feathers there. So each of the bare quills ended in a nearly round feathered button. ”I think. my dear. that you have taken off enough." said Mn. Motmot, who was looking on. Motmot said nothing. He pull- ed a tiny feather from one side of one tail feather just above part just a very wee bit longer. He did the same thing to the other tail feather. "Don't you think thatis bet- ter?" said he. Mrs. Motmot didn't say and Mot-mot continued. "I think per- haps two or three more from each will be better still. Don't you, my dear?" "I think enough is enough. and you have done enough," declared Mrs. Motimot rather shortly. Motmot pulled off one more tiny feather and stopped pruning his a APRIL, 14. 19: bearing 0 Photograph and Fingon-prints.
