In 1999, three artist-jurors—painter Nancy Morin (Moncton, New Brunswick), printmaker Dan Steeves (Sackville, New Brunswick), and potter/sculptor Carl Phillis (Winsloe, P.E.I.}—examined 155 works by 103 artists. As in past years, all en- tries were placed on public view for a few days leading up to, and including, the jury date. Participating artists and the general public were encouraged to make their own judgments, as well as to witness the jurying process. The jury selected 33 works by 30 artists. The selected artists, in alphabetical order, are: Patricia Bates - Nature (A Culture of its Own) , wood and recycled machine parts; Levi Cannon - 56 Crowvette Broom , leather, fur, wood, papier maché, dried wild grasses and weeds; Mary Carr-Chaisson - Lily , pinhole photograph; Hung-Min Chiang - Blue Cat, oil on canvas; Susan Christensen - Fireweed , monoprint; Giselle Déziel - Rainy Day Visitor , oil on canvas; Lesley Dubey - Quilt , mezzoprint; Vian Emery - Into the Light , drypoint; Nan Ferrier - Filming Emily at the Yeo House , oil on canvas; Jamie Germaine - Sea Rock , clay; Richard Guertin - Dejection , oil on canvas; Elaine Harrison - The Great Big Sea , oil on canvas, and The Red Sleigh , oil on board; Andrew Henderson - Pentimento , acrylic on canvas; Barry Jeeves - Autumn Leaves, Corner of Ambrose & Green, Charlottetown PEI , acrylic on gessoed board; . The public is invited to cast a vote for the work they think is the best in the show. The artist whose work receives the most votes over the course of the exhibition will win a cash award, courtesy of ARTSatlantic Magazine. Other Island-based sponsors include Williams and Crue (1982) Ltd., The Buzz, and Attic Cresting Inc. Everyone is invited to the Great Garden of the Gulf Juried Exhibition #5 opening on Sunday, February 7, 1999, at 2:00 p.m. in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum. Other exhibitions also officially opening are: The Illuminated Life of Maud Lewis: An Exhibition by the Nova Scotian Folk Artist, 1903-1970, a national touring exhibition sponsored by Scotiabank; Young Curators #6 Blue ; and, Levi Cannon: All Our Relatives. Confederation Centre Art Gallery and Museum admission is charged Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. There is no admission charged on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Mondays.
