Public Health Nursing In '47 _-e-- The Public Health Nursing Ser vice has had its usual busy round of work. There have been no ac- ditions to the staff and the five district nurses - Mrs. John Cam- eron for West Prince, Miss Eleanor Wheler for East Prince and Wesi. Queens, Miss Bessie Beer, Central and East Queens. Miss Mary Les- lio, Kings. lifiss Ruth Ross, Char- lottetown, together with Miss Dorc- thy 00x and Miss Irma Tait doing specialized provincial work, with Miss Mona Wilson, Director of Public Health Nursing - all have had a busy year. In the Public Health Nurse's life ithore is always something new to lbs done which she manages to iadd to an already crowded prc- ‘gramme. This year the extra work |was helping with a BCG study of vaccinating against tuberculosis conducted by Dr. C. B. Stewart of Dalhousio University, formerly oi’ Norboro, P. E. I. This entailed five and six visits to a group of homes in each county, offering protec- tion against tuberculosis to some of the negative reactors to tuber- culin in the. homes of known tub- erculosis cases. ‘ This frequently included calling at factory. warehouse, wharf and back fields to find the fathers and sons at work, or returning to a homo several time; in one day in order to find every member of the family. There was excellent co-op- oration from all concerned and ap- preciation for the vaccinations done in this study which will be fol- lowed up over a period of years. These will give more mothers opportunity of consulting the nurses regarding problsms‘ of oars and training of their babies and young children. The scarcity of such through- out the country has seriously ham- pered our efforts. The genera] health of the public has been well maintained. No ser- ious epidemic made its appear- ance and both the morbidity and mortality rate has been held ‘.0 a minimum. The care of tuberculo- sis patiants_and the hospital for paralysed children at the Provin- cial Bonaborium have functioned well and tho best use has been made of the space provided, ai- though despite the added space in the new construction already were is a shortage of beds. The Provincial laboratory, which was very materially strengthened last. year by the appointment of a Director has widened its scope of activity. Bacteriology, histtnogy, serology and pathology are flour- ishing units and. in addition, speci- mens for analyses from the gen- eral practitioners, police, etc, are examined and reported on from day to day. Progress can also be reported in the treatment of the social diseases with the more ex- tensive use c1 penicillin and the hospitalizlng and intense treat- ment of selected cases cf sspuilis. School Activities More than the usual number of schools were visited during the year by the Chief Health Officer. who conducted clinics in the schools of West Queen's and Prince Couli- ties. Parents and guardians of school and pro-school children were again given an opportunity of having their children protected against Smallpox by vaccination. In the wide field of sanitation, what, may eventually prove to be the moat outstanding event for the year was the appointment of a director in Sanitary Engineering. The appointee will shortly join tho staff and direct the work ir this vital field. Routine duties, ‘such as inspections of factories, ovcr- night cabins, etc, were performed and nuisances investigated in all parts of the Province. The public health nurses whose labors were centred particularly l" the public schools. have had busy year. ‘hvo of them, ‘ trained in the em of the towel“ osis and the othfl‘ lWflI-lly l-illll‘ ed in the epidemiology of social diseases, have the entire Pfiivm“ as their field of operation. At Falcon- wood Hospital a nurses’ residence, men's staff quarters and an occu- pational therapy building are ill the process of construction. In the Welfare Branch the io- creased grants for extra mural treatment of tuberculosis and for ‘social assistance have been fully lutillzed and an increased number of investigations were carried out. In this division the need for more qualified workers is particularly tfelt. There was a noticeable de- crease in the number of Juvenile ' delinquent dealt with. l The Old Age Pensions to be effectively administered.
