NAME OF ASSOCIATION. Home discussion took plaoc regard- ing the name to be given the 5550- clation. Mr. B. A. McDonald moiedt “That the name of this association be the Queen’s County Silver Black Fox Association. ' ’ Mr. Woodman seconded, and this war; agreed to. NOMINATION. The chairman reported that the committee previously appointed had made the following nomin:¢tious:»- President, Alex. Ross, M.D.; Vice- President, James Paton; Secretary- Freasurer, J. W. Jones. Executive Committee: W. B. Prowse, G, A, B, _¢IcDons.ld', R. E. Spillett, J, A, Web- ster. These were put to the mr and carried by acciamation, and the name of the chairman was unani- rnously entered to complete an exc- cutive of five. _ INSPECTION. The chairman stated that Major Sherman was present, representing :he Depurtlnenf. of Agriculture, to iear any suggestions that might be nade in regard to quarantine and inspection. He (the chairman) had Jeen making some inquiries among some of the practical stock-breeders and ranch-owners and found that' in- spection of importatious was about the only practical precaution they :ould take in the meantime. Quar- intine at the port of landing had leen suggested, but this did not zeeni. to be feasible for various reas- ins. He thought an inspection on landing and _a subsequent inspection zome time later would answer the __iurpose. Major Sherman said so far as the :stablishment of a quarantine sta- :ion was concerned the difficulty was very great. The Government could iiardly taie the responsibility of _lacing a large number of valuable loxes in special quarantine. The risk .vas too great, The best it could do .viis to enforce inspection on landing and re-inspection. The local Govern- .nent would undertake the duty of providing the necessary police and the Federal Government would supply the inspectors. He should like to .mow the interval that would' be necessary between the initial inspec- tion and re-inspection. After some _discussion it was agreed that three weeks should elapse between the first and second inspection. Dr. Ross moved as follows: "That the association recommend that all foxes should be inspected on landing ny a competent veterinary surgeon, and also three weeks after landing; in the meantime the foxes to.be iso- lated in charge of the ownerand not to be sold or disposed of." Mr. Prowse, in seconding, explained that some time ago a brood of foxes were imported from New Brunswick, four of which subsequently died from disease. The owner explained that on arrival they appeared to be all right, but three iveeks later they de- veloped a sort of disease and Dr. Ross and Dr. Lundie, a veterinary surgeon, were called in. They diag- nosed the trouble as a skin disease akin to mange in a dog. Four died and they recommended that the fifth should be slaughtered. The skin was submitted to the Veterinary Depart- ment of the Department of Agricul- uure, who pronounced the disease to be pssrpoctic mange, which was very contagious. Had these imported fox- es been placed in the ranch with the focal breed it would have spelled dis- aster. Thcse happened to ba red fox- cs, but they might have been black, and they could easily realize what that would have meant to the own- er. .According to the owner these .oxes appeared perfect ,on arrival, t. disease not developing until three weeks later. Mr. Woodman said he had been in- formed from the Department of Ag- riculture that this manga and com- mon dog distemper were the only two diseases they had to fear among the pups, and the Department had recommended that they should he very careful to keep dogs away from the ranches when any trouble was go- ing about. The resolution was unanimously agreed to. SUBSCRIPTION. On the motion of_Dr. Ross, second- ed by Mr. Dinnis, it was agreed that the fee for membership should 'ba $2.00.
