C. stobbe, Field Husbandry Division, Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa. By sour land is meant land which is acid in re- action and which requires a cer- tain amount of lime or other alkaline substances to make the soil sweet or neutral in reaction. Very frequently farmers and other use the term ‘-Sour Land" for poorly or imperfectly drained soils, which do not produce sat- isfactory crops and whim gen- eralfy favour the growth of mois- ture loving plants, such as, horse tail, sedge: and moss, Such land may or may not be sour or acid in reaction. It will be presented to the citiz- ens of Vancouver and the boa-rd of parks commissioners has s- greed to appropriate $150 an sore annually toward its maintenance. A statement announcing plans for the project said: "Vancouver is the chief city in an area of great forest wealth and should have at hand suitable means constantly to remind the public of the importance of its forests as well as to provide cor- rect information about native trees. ‘ ."The aboretum will provide sil school children, students. and the public in general, with the means to learn how to identify at last those of our native trees most commonly in use. "It will develop. with trees and native shrubs, an ares of greet public attraction end civic value that may, be passed on from one generation to another as an Im- portant cultural asset. It will also provide and develop channels for the collecting of rare tree speci- mens for placement in the abor- etum. The industry's foresters will aid this work." Within the bounds of the abor- etum it is planned to display ef- feciively trees and shrubs under natural conditions. They will be labelled and essential descriptive data will be available. rock fragments hrs found in the sub-soils and. in the underlying geological materials the poorly drained. dark -coicured soils in gentle depressions are generally less acid than the surrounding well-drained soils In many in- stances such poorly drained soils are neutral or alkaline in reaction and therefore require no lime, whereas the adjacent well-drained soils may be acid to various de- grees. Such poorly drained soils which have often been wrongly re- ferred to as sour land, do not need lime, but improved drainage. The application of additional lime vlttout Improving the tkslnsge of such soils would in many cases lower the productive capacity of such land. In areas where limestone rock kagments are absent from the sub-soil and the underlying geolo- gical materials, the poorly drained as well as the well-drained soils, are generally sour or acid in re- action. Under such conditions the poorly and imperfectly drained soils are often somewhat more acid than the associated well- drained soils. The cultivated sur- face soils of such sour. poorly drained soils are generally more greyish in colour than the well- drained soils, Applications hi’ lime to the land in such areas are gen- erally more beneficial ‘on the well-. drained soils than on the more acid, poorly drained land unless the drainage conditions of the latter are Improved at the same time.
