It ia not soluble, or available as a fertiliver, as we find it at present, If it was, every rain shower would wash it away in brown streams to the maw of the devouring sea. But nature knows how to save her treasures for the future use of her children. The leafy har- vest, of a thousand painted autumns are stored here, safely waiting the service of the intelligent husbandman. Peat, to be of service ag manure, must first be rendered soluble. This will be accoluplished by the action of an alkali, Wither of the following methods may be adopted to convert peat into manure :— | Ist, add 2 per cent. of soda; 2nd, add 3 per cent. of potash; 3rd, mix with 4 its amount animal manure. The last is most easily accomplished by carting the dried peat into the cattle yards and stables where the waste ammonia—especially that from the liquid— will make the peat equally valuable with the stable manure itself.
