Good question. Here are some facts... | Basically, the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) is Canada’s national organization for post- secondary students, with 450.000 members in some 75 student associations from universities, colleges, and institutes from all over the country. CFS is actually composed of two different but con- nected federations. The first is known simply as the - Canadian Federation of Students and represents the concerns of students and education on the national scene. It maintains an office and staffin Ottawa that is constantly engaged in lobbying the Federal government on the lack of proper funding for post- secondary education, barriers to accessibility in post-secondary education, the inadequacy of the present system of student loans, and other issues that affect students every day. It coordinates cam- paigns that are run on campuses all over Canada on issues of concern to students and the state of educa- tion in Canada and speaks to the media, politicians, and the general community on behalf of students. CFS was recently judged to be one of the ten most effective political lobby groups in Canada, an as- sessment further evidenced by the fact that the government has actually made a point of consulting CFS on such issues as proposed changes to the Canada Student Loan Program and the currentcon stitutional debate. The second federation is the Canadian Federation of Students-Services. CFS-Services is a services cooperative that provides students and student asso- — ciations with services of that would otherwise be impossible to obtain or obtain at reasonable cost. The ‘‘Studentsaver’’ system of discounts, which provides students with over 6,000 retail discounts across Canada and over 100 on PEI, is one of these services. Studentsaver discount stickers or cards are provided to students who are members ofastudent _ union or association which is part of CFS. UPEI X-P RESS March 5, 1992 Page 12
