S'side Town Council Holds Monthly Meeting The regular montly meeting of the Bummereide town Council was held last evening with Mayor wedge presiding and with all councillors present except Coun- cilor Sheen. Town paid bills amo ” , to &.'lS8.4e were approved and town unpaid bills amounting to 54,233.91 were ordered paid. Electric light bills paid amounting to 3194.18 were confirmed and unpaid bills amounting to s1o.'m.7s were order- ed paid. Mayor Wedge explained that due to the fact that the grant for cleaning the waterfront had not yet been received from the Provin- cial Government the work had not been done this year so far. He said that he hoped this grant. which annually amounts to one hundred dollars and which is matched by it like amount by the town, would be forthcoming before the tourist sea- son was over. Reporting for the water and sewage committee, Councillor Mor- rison submitted resolutions re- questing permimion to lay water and sewage linw on West Street. North Market Street west of St. Lawrence, and on sheen street at a cost of 82400. Permission was granted by the meeting. Councillor Driscoll said that all the motors at the light plant have been overhauled and are in good working order. He said that a new system of ventilation had been in- stalled at the light plant which would be of wonderful value and most beneficial as far as the health of the employees was concerned. This system would also, he said. make a lot of work in connection with the cleaning of engines un- necemary in the future. Councillor schurman said that the work of repairing the breaks in the town pavement was still going on. The work had been more ex- tensive than was at first thought he explained. He Submitted resolutions re- questing permission for his depart- ment to open streets at the follow- ing sections: From Harvard Street to I-Ieclcbs.-rt's Lane; from-Harvard Street to Noonan Street; from Granville street to summer Street in the hospital area. Councillor Steele submitted the police report which indicated that the .work of cutting down the hedg- es at various street intersections was going on and that property owners in Summerside were all co- operating with the police depart- ment in having the hedges cut down and in some cases removed altogether. Councillor Steele submitted a re- solution to change the existing by- law and to make Notre Dame Street from Central. wut fig. Mayor Stewart in his remarks stressed the fact that agriculture is of prime importance, not only to rural sections of this Province but to Charlottetown as well. He reminded the visitors that the city will be celebrating its 100th anniversary three years hence. I-lc concurred in Premier Jones' state- ment that one of the most import.- ant problems at the present time is to find means of keeping the younger people at home. Brief complimentary remarks were made by Dr. J. B. Taggcrt. Federal Deputy Minister of Agri- culture. who was called upon by the chairman at the close of the meeting. Rounding out the Kelly repre- sentation is Lorne, a. horseman possessed of much track experi- ence and a calculating driver. Lorna has Roma Budlong. He will also team Dale 13,. the pacer owned by Mr. Geo. Hughes iof Brackley. which has given racing fans many a thrill in the past few years. Claude 0'Brien's ability with horses, places him high in list of Island drivers. He is so well regarded that many a parl-mutuel ticket is bet on Claude rather than the horse he happens to be driv- n . 8 one Cari Aubrey. Tracey Direct and Capt. Missouri are all owned by Sam Kennedy. Sam drives his own horses and has a habit of ending up at the front of the parade, when least expected. . . . Greatest showman of the lot is Colonel D. A. MacKinnon. The Colonel who once had ten or more in his stable regularly is taking things easier now. With Lassie Lucille and Feather Duster he is keeping his hand in and getting as much kick as ever out of the racing game. . I I Remember the great duels last year between Argot Pointer and Cheeky Chief? Argot Pointer is still the property of Horace Willis. and he is also the owner of Lor- raine Abbe and J.S.J.
