WESTMINSTER ABBEY BELLS.
in order that they may take an
appropriate part in the celebration
of peace, the six old »bells at West-
ininlster Ahlicy are to be thoroughly
restored, and new cries will be added
to complete the octave. These old
bells are of great historic interest.
All except the treble (or smallest)
were eiist at the Whitechapel Iseli
i<‘oundry of Messrs, Mears ami Stain-
bank. The tenor, which is the larg-
est, weighing one ton and a half.
was cast ln 1738; the fifth in 1598;
the fourth and second in 1743, and
the third ii. 1853. The treble is an
early fourteenth century bell, cast
probably by llicliard de Wymbish,
who wus founding in the parish of
Aldgnte at that time. The treble and
third must have been rung to cole-
brate the victory over the Spanish
Armada in 1588. and one of them will
ring again to slgnulize the greatest.
