Now. if we do not intend to rest satisfied Bcason, 3: asadiis auiktindl e aisapper inted; 19 OpSstructeds with tle facilities we possess, it strikes us that tie present would be a good time to call meetings te discuss this important subject. The inhabitants of several parts of the :nainland are now, we observe, meet- ing an | reasoning together with a view of getti steamers and railways for their benetk Should not we, also, consult together for the purpose of forwarding our interests in this regard? The men who provided the Princess of Wales and St. Lawrence are deserving of great} raise forthe enterprise they have displayed; but, though as comfortable as the fine weather of summer, the Princes of Weles and St. Lawrence are, 1% is adm tied, not suited tothe turbulent waters of the Straits in the fall and early winter. A good screw boat is now re- quired; and, who are the public-spirited men willing to run the risk of meeting this want! Then, as to the route by which fall and winter communication shall be kept up? Y'o the public generally, it must seem that the shortest route is the best route. Now the shortest route is ‘‘between the Capes”; and t» the Capes there is, at present, no brane! lines of railway making connections with tie existing means of travel and trade. Besides these, the required landing places are waating. Therefore, this route cannot now »e used in the very limited way admitted of by the oats. S ancrry of water is reported from all paris of the country. Nearly all the wells havo long been dry, and many springs which never failed befere are failing now. It is said that some farmers have to go miles for water for their households and stoc<. The hope that before the winter finally set in, there would be the usual rait: fail, may now, apparently, be given up; and there is nothing for it but husband carefully the limited supply of water vouchsafed, and. wait for reliei. Farmers who have plenty of turnips and potatoes may partially supply the wants of their cattle by liberally feeding them with those roots. (ante ies Potatoes Frozen. ic is reported that Jack Frost has entered, meay cellars throughout the country, and spoiled the potatoes therein. When will farmers learn not to neglect or put off the most important work of the fall, viz.: making their cellars frost-proof, Ee lualy Georgiana Fullerton, the well- known Roman Catholic novelist, is a sister to Earl Granville, now foreign secretary. The Scoteh haggis, the favorite dish of the dinner, was inirednced in grand style. The bagpiper of the Club, accompanied by the butler, proceeded to the carving room. There the ‘‘ great chieftian o’ the puddin’ race” was presented tothe latier, who bore it to the Chairman preceded by. the former playing ‘‘ Bonnie Dundee.” As they passed along an Eagtish friend at our right, who was attracted by the singular appearaoce of the haggis, exclaimed ‘* Heaven preserve us, there’s a boiled bagpipe,” while the sons of Scotia welcomed it in the words of Burns :— Fair fa’ your henest, sonsie face, Great Chieftian o’ the puddin’ race, Aboon them a’ ye take your place, Parrich, tripe or thairm ; Weel are ye worthy of a grace As laug’s my arm. McNeill, Esgq., who made lengthy reference to the success | which attended the exhibition of cattle and agricultural products at Montreal last summer. In responding to the toast of ‘‘The Mayor and Corporation,’ Hon, A. A. McDonald read a letter from James Byrne, Esq., C. C., apologising for his absence. The letter contained a beautiful allusion to the Land of the Heather, and was acknow- ledged by three hearty cheers for Mr, Byrne. The speeches of the night were those delivered by Rev. K. McLennan, Professor! Caven, and Capt. James Irving. They'| were brief, eloquent, and well suited to the occasion. and James McDonald, added much to the, enjoyment of the guests by singing a num- : ber of Scottish songs. ‘‘Scotland Yet,” by | the Professor, was delightful; Mr. Mc- Bachern’s rendition of ‘‘Bonnie Charlie’s no’ awa’,” was clever; while Mr. McDonald’s singing in the vernacular well deserved the applause it received. se About 2 o'clock p. m., after singing “Auld Lang Syne,” the party broke up, and marched out of the Hall te the tune of the bagpipes. oni ~ aenanatnatasumaarnannedn= nS Se a DLL NEWS BY TELEBRAPH, SpecialtDespateh to Kramer.
