We understand that the ‘Seaside Hotel,” Rustico Beach, will be run at reduced rates till the Ist of October. This beautiful sum- mer resort well deserves the patronage of the public and will well repay a visit. Sir A. T. Gatr is publishing—- in pamphlet form—an address in defence of the Canadian national policy, with a view to its circulation among the members of the British Chamber of Commerce. Ropert Berrs was examined before Justice Wright, of Sunbury, N. B., on Friday last, and was committed for trial at the next ses- sion of the Sunbury Supreme Court, for the manslaughter of Joseph Stockford, also of Sunbury, N. B. We notice that Mr. A. W. Mathers, cleared yesterday for Lon- don, taking 14,427 cases of canned fish and ether cargo, making a total value of $74,491. — He, Chroniele. Mary Ann Murpny, ‘‘a bit of an Irish girl,” as she styles herself, was arrested on Saturday evening for breaking glass in the Railway offico where she had been demand- ing satisfaction for loss sustained by a Con- ductor giving her a bogus bank note, in change, while on paggage fiom this city to Moncton. Shecould not, it appears get the required satisfaction for her loss and be- coming violent broke several windows. This morning no prosecuter appeared and she was discharged. AvytHosy Hamivroy, a boy about twelve years of age, was charged with burglary at the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court this morning, by Mr. John Warren, policeman. Mr. Warren, it appears, has been missing goods and money from his shop, which is situated on Fitzroy St., for a number of weeks. He came to the conclu- sion that his premises had been entered during his absence, and, yesterday, he determined to layin wait for the thief. He lay quietly hid in his store from early morn, but, until three o'clock, there were no visible signs of the thief. At that time the boy above named entered through the cellar-hatch, and in all haste repaired to the till, jextracted ei a few pieces of silver coin, ani was about disappearing through the cellar hatch when Mr. Warren emerged from his hiding place and grasped the youthful thief, who bad evidently been plun- dering his shop for weeks past. — he youthful burglar was conveyed to the police station, and this morning the Stipendiary Magistrate sen- tenced him to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor for the offence. Ee Tere is evidence of this city being at ptes- ent infested by a gang of skilful—if not pro- fessional—burglars and shoplifters. Within t.e last fortnight we have heard many reports of burglaries and larcenies in the centre, as well as the subarbs,of the city. On Saturday aight a most daring burglary was committed. A store on one of our public squares was en- tered by the front doorand the burglarsescaped with a lapse booty. On Thursday night the door of a store on the corners of Great George aud Cent Streets, was almost forced open. This attempt at burglary was even more daring than the first nentioned—a blazing gas lamp stood ten yards from the door upon which the operated with impunity. They were not disturbed and only left the prem ises from sheer} inability to enter, ewing to the strong fastenings on the door. These are two instances among many which we could quote. That the eity is wholly uuprotected from burglars is a fact which cannot be denied at present, and this will in the immediate future, if a radical change does not take place, be clearly appar- ent to all. We shall see what our City Fathers have tu say about this matter to-night. LONDON ane ie — ened iQUSe JULY. NOW SHOWING ! A Lot of Mens’ White Vests, AT 50 CTS. AND 75 CTS. EACH.
