Reports submitted showed that continued progress was being ‘made in all branches of the church work, and a healthy spirit of optimism in the Iuture of the Presbyterian Church in Canada was evident. A large part of the afternoon and evening sederunts was devoted to a discussion of the boys’ residence at Pictou, which is carried on in af- filiation with Pictou Academy by the Presbyterian Church in Can- ada. After s. lengthy discussion,‘ participated in by several commis- ' sinners, it was resolved to continue to administer the residence during the school year 1931-32 as it had . been conducted during the previous year, and g, committee was up» pointed in so into the whole mat- ter of the administration of the affairs oi’ the residence in future. The committee is composed of: $118M! Ronald Macvicar, Sydney (convener); Dr. Hugh Guthrie, New Glasgow; Rev. D. 0. MacKsy, Elmsdsle: Rev. George s. Mitchell, Campbellton; Rev. S. J. MacAr- ihur» MOHCWH: Rev. w. E. Davies, Cardigan; C. A. Macvcy, Frederic- ton; Rev. l". G. MacDonald, East River. Bt- Mary's; Rev. M. u. Mac- Donald, Boulardarie; Donald Mac_ Kinnon, Charlottetown; H. S. Ken- nedy, stcllarton. ~ A resolution which evoked con- siderable discussion was that pre- sentedthis evening by Rev, A. D_ MceKinnon, oi.’ Whycocomagh, con- vener of the Synods committee on temperance. The resolution, which was carried after a. lengthy debate, was as follows: “The Synod of the Maritime Pro- vlnces oi! the Presbyterian Church in Canada is deeply concerned with the problem presented by the traf- fic in. intoxicating liquors, and do. plores the consumption of liquor for beverage purposes, which con- tinues to be large. It here registers ‘its protest, against the liquor traf- gfic, the manufacture and sale o! jliquor. Your committee is convinced ithct for years stress has been laid on legal restriction ..to the neglect ~ of educational effort, such as might be given by the homes, schools, and churches, and which we believe would prepare the way for the re- moval of the havoc wrought by li- quor. The Synod regards this an opportune time to carry on among our young people, particularly, a campaign setting forth the benefits oi.’ total abstinence. It regards the evil an unjustifiable one, weaken- ingthe whole fibre oi.’ a man's life, reflecting detrimentally on man's well being, physical, moral and spiritual, and commends prayerful effort on the part of our people that the havoc of the liquor traffic may be eliminated as much and as soon as is possible." - Rev. W. M. Mackay, Synodicai missionary for northern Ontario and Eastern Manitoba, who has laccn acting as Synodical mission- nry in the Marltimes‘ during the past two months, spoke briefly to- night, emphasizing the lmimflflflfic of the proper functioning of tho various Presbyteries. If every pres- bytery functioned one hundred per cent perfectly, said Mr. MacKay, a great many of the church officials and field workers could be dispens- ed with. The question of the appointment of a synodlcal missionary for the Maritime Provinces to succeed the late Rev. F. G. MacKintosh, M. A. came up for discussion at the con- clusion of Mr. MacKayZs address. " 'I‘l'ie “General ' assembly "had asked the Synod to recommend a man. but it was decided that on the ground of economy the matter be deferred. The Presbyteries to en- deavor to carry on for the present without a synodical missionary. l ‘i 5AAlllllflllllllpnllnilll 11111111111 III SilIIl 0 II - ' tl h Stay a! the largest hotel In the Maritime Provinces.
