The Harvard Economic Society week- ly Letter Recently Offered The Following Opinion on Buslncss= Seasonal changes aside, general business for some time now has neither lost ground appreciably nor gained It. The latest break In stock prices, both because of the fresh losses entailed and the effect on bus- iness sentiment, is an influence tem- porarily retarding business improve- ment. On the other hand, there are certain powerful forces which make for improvement. the stimulus af- forded by very casy money, the closer balance which has now been attained between production and consump- tion, and the current low prices of raw materials. Moreover, groélcr activities is already indicated for im- poriant industries. Though the rings may aid to a cer- tain extent, due to the friction cxez- ted by them against the sides of the ring grooves. their purpose is tnalniy- to insure good compression in tnc, v cylinders. No matter now strong the l ringtension may be. a piston slap will result should too much clearance exist between the pistcn and the cylinder walls. Consider the Acccssoriu When repair work of any klnd is done. it is common to consider only the standard mechanisms. very little, if any. attention being paid to the little jimcracks which the car owner usually attaches hinlself. Most of the repair shops today operate on the flat rate system of labor charges, a. standard definite rate being fixed for any particular repair. One complaint against this system ls that repair shops in general do not closely follow the standard rates. One reason for this is that the standard rates cover only the removal and replaccmentpf the standard equipment: if the car owner loads the car with accessories which Interfere with the repair work according to standard methods, he must expect an added charge for the removal and replacement of thcsc ac- cessories. Filling the Crankcasr The motorist who carries a can of oil in the car usually finds that the spout on the can is not long enough to reach the breather pipe. As a fun- nel ls seldom carried, the outside of the engine usually receives an oil bath every time the crankcase is fillcd on the road. To avold this un- plcasantness, a funnel may easily be made from a plcce of pipe, and will occupy very little room in the tool box. The pipe ls bent on one end. while the other end is split and fash- ioned Into a sort of a scoop into which the oil is poured. Holding the Blow-nut Patch When applying a blow-out patch to a tire it is annoying to have the patch slip inside the shoe when plac- ing it on the rim, as it usually means that the shoe must be removed and the work done over again. By a sim- ple method. this diiflculty can be avoided. A good-sized safety pin is fastened to each of the outer edges o.’ the patch, a heavy rubber-band is then stretched around the outside of the shoe and fastened to the pins, '*Q.QOQOOOOOOOOOOOOOJOQOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOQ ' mm The Car Owner's Scrap Book Iy O.
