Lowell, James Ruase i] Ee Actual and Imaginary Necessities. | What queer ideas of life some persons have. Very mixed notions prevail of what go to make up the needs of exis- tence. And the silliness of some people with regard to the supposed degradation of doing any work is exasperating. Here is an instance which tendsto make oue decisre fhat a little healthy starva- tion would be the best thing for such people. A lady writes to the paper: “Hearing of a case of marked destitu tiou in the vicinity of my home I de- termined to investigate it sad render such assistance as I could. I found the family in actual want. They had been living for a week on potatoes ‘nlone. The family consisted of a widow with a grown daughter and several smaller children. The mother and daugbter affected absurd and amusing airs. “ ‘We're used to better things,’ said the daughter, who had evidently spent half the morning curling her hair. ‘* ‘Indeed we are, the mother. ‘We were born and raised ladies.’ ‘Indeed we know what fine society means, ‘Indeed we do. best, in our day.” «And could again with a little help. ‘*Our hands have never yet been disgraced by common work,’ «“ ‘Nor never will be if we can help it.’ “ ‘The visiting lady adds that feeling sorry for the little children she said to these women, “If you will tell me what you need most, I willsee that you have it.”’ After a prolonged and whispered con- ference between the mother’ and daughter, the mother said with the utmost complacency: ‘If you will get the little girls seme blue kid shoes, a beaded Jersey jacket for my oldest daughier, snd asetof Langtry waves and an ¢ mbroidered shopping-bag for myself,we will try and get along for the present,as Our Most pressing wants will thus be relieved.’ ” Che truth of the above may seem at first hard to realize, But such useless and foolish people do actually exist. We know of a case iu which a group of friends once subscribed a certain sum for a genteel family who were penni- and well-nigh dinnerless. The amount was sufficient to previde _fire- wood and food for time—these being their urgent wants. The indigna- tion of at least one of that group was intense when he saw, Within the week one of the females of the household re- ferred to flaunting a new and tasteful ment, on which, he learned, she had spent one-third of the sum which had beea donated to line their stomachs, not to cover their backs. This sort of thing it is which chille the charity — in people’s bosoms, These were women who ought to have had common sense, judging from their education and for- mer surroundings.— Monetary Times. , said We've went in the less, some silk g: A Cano.—To all who are suffering from errors and indiscretions of youth, nervous we akne 4, Catly decav, loss of manhood. &e, I will send a recipe that will cure you, FREE OF CHARGE. MARK WRIGHT & CO, Ch’town, June 23—3aw wkly New and Original Depariurs in Coal Cooking Stoves COMBINING DURABILITY, HEAT AND ECONOMY. This Cut represents my Patent Fire end and lining partially drawn eut, is If appears while being cicaned, or when a new lining is being replaced. King Cooking Stove, with the even, HE above Stove I invented and patented in 1876, and at the preseat time HUN- DREDS ARE IN USE, giving perfect satisfaction, A large number have been in contant use for eight years, and the repairs have been very trifling, in many instances none have been required. This valuable experience should be sufficient evidence of their durability, which is accounted for in the follow ng:—It bas, instead of a Lined Fire Box, two heavy Currugated Cylinders, which obviate the expense connected with all Square Cooking Stoves of being compelled to renew Linings avd Grates, at least once or twice every year, The heat being radiated from the Cylin- ders to the floor, where most needed, overcomes a__ serious objection to all kinds of ordinary Coal Cooking - S'oves. The Cylinders are situated directly under the cover holes, and a fire may be made in one or both, thus adapting it for use either in winter or summer, with equal satictaction, besides effecting a great saving to fuel, I have also attached the PATENT TELESCOPIC OVEN to all my Elevated Oven Wood Stoves, such gs the Waterloo, Niagara, Star, &c , causing the thousands using them to exclaim—My Stoves are worth TEN DOLLABS MORE than the sare kind made by other foundries, The trade and retail purchasers will please bear in mind the fact that although a great advantage is claimed for my own Oven above all others, they cost no more, and being the sole manufacturer and patentee, no other fvundry can supply. En- quire for Fawcett’s Patent Telescope Oven, and it your dealer has none on hand send direct to the Sackville Stove Foundry. I am adding several new and handsome Patterns this season, which, with my former large variety of One Hundred Different Patterns and Sizes of Cooking, Parlor, Office and Hall Stoves, also Farmers Boilers, Hollowware, Ploughs, Stove Pipes and Tinware, com- prise the most complete assortment offered by any manufacturer in the Lower Provinces, Terms ang prices will be found as favorable as can be obtained elsewhere, CHARLES FPAWCET?, SACKVILLE FOUNDRY, SACKVILLE, N.
