Women As \Var Workers The nced for thc women as war workers is steadily growing. llany- married women have gone into this employaucnt, but it is desirable that single women 11-1111 their lesser responsibilities be taken first. It is for this reason that the national registration of women is to be held, beginning on Sept. 14 with those from 2o to 24 years of age. Other age groups will be registered later. The registration is compulsory, but women will not be compelled to take jobs. The object is to direct women to employhfctlt in which they can render national service. There are about 1,200,000 Canadian women now in gainful employment of all kinds, accord- i11g to the Dominion Bureau of Statistics. They are mostly single women. An invesigation made I. year ago suggested that not more than 68,000 married women were wage earners. There are thus far more married than single women who could be draxvn upon if necessary, for war work. lVhethcr, and how long, the employment of wo- men will remain voluntary, and whether married women also will be taken i11to employment, will depend on the length of the war and the strains upon the manpower of the country_ For the present, women in the more indus- trialized parts of the country will be needed for war industries and other employment more than the women in other parts. But an advantage in the employment of single women is that they can move easily from one part of the country to an- other, and the housing problem also will not be so difficult. Ministers’ Cars The Financial Post reminds Canadian tax- payers that its “your money” that continucsa $2,- 000 car allowance to Ministers of the Crown even though gasoline rationing precludes the use of an automobile to anything like this amount. Commenting on this matter in the last day of Parliament, ll. R. jack-man, M. P., "pointed out that a $2,000 car allowance if prorated on a mile- age basis of 7 1-2 cents a mile, which he des- cribed as the common commercial figure for automobile cxpmiscs, would represent a total of 26,660 miles. Said Mr. Jackman: "Against this 26,650 miles is the fact that we have now gasoline rationing and the ordinary person is not allowed 1o drive more than 4,000 or 5,000 miles." The $2,000 car allowance is tax free. w.11i>1111111¢11011 P1111111; Two pitfalls continue to face those authorities charged with the war production of the United Nations. For the first time since 1931, it is announced, civil servants will be able to take "outside" jobs i11 their leisure under a new ortler-in-cotmcil stispcntling previous regulations for the duration. The su- spension order, Iiassctl on rcco111111c111l11tio11 of thc Treasury Board set out that the deputy head of each department be empowered to authorize e111- ployces to engage in gainful occupations outside their regular hours of employment. Limitation 011 part-time work of civil servants during their spare time was first imposed II years ago as a depression measure. u a a a Parents and wives of soldiers reported missing as a. result of the Battle of Dicppe will continue to receive assigned pay and dependents‘ allowances for from three to six months, under the standard practice of the Dependents’ Allow- ances Board. If it is established that a. man is killed the case is at once transferred to the Pensions Commission and whatever pension is in order is paid. A soldier, however, is not pre- sumed dead until he has been 111issi11g for six months. An adjustment is made in the pension to take care of any additional amount which might be due as a result of dating the pension back to the time of death. n- 41 n- n1 Here is something in which the airmen here are interested. It appears an R. A. F. pilot may shave the edge of the spire of a church, but must be careful how he shaves the hair on his lip. One station commander has had his young officers on the carpet and ordered them either to grow full moustachcs or to shave clean. The “Chaplin” is barred and the “Ronald Colman" is an equal threat to the war effort. The wise men at thc Air Ministry i11 London reported that King's Regulations lay it down that “wl1c11 moustaches are worn the whole of the upper lip must remain unshaven." Current reaction in the R. A.
