Harris of Halifax, a. prominent advo- cate of union ia~ es up his parable in favor of union ln the latest issue ol The Busy East lllagazine, printed in St. John. lllr. Harris had telore -.\ritten much and ably on the sub- _ect.. But neither of these gentlemen h s answered, or attempted to an- sw-r she objections to the scheme 1h*-t have been put forward from the Prince Edward Island standpoint. Union is a pretty word, and Acadia would be 3 pretty and historic name for the united Provinces. So far good. Acadia thus constituted would carry more weight in the counsels of the Dominion than would the three separate Provinces, perhaps! It must bca legislative union, of course, for one federal union could not exist within another. There would be one Governor, one Government, one Leg- islature. one Supreme Court, ‘one Board of Education, one capital for the new Acadia. _’l‘_h_ese_w‘ou1d, of necessity, be located on the main_ land. So 1n11ch would be taken uwny from Prince Edward Island. The representation in the Qanndian Legislature would presumably be in eemed to be dignified and good tem- ,tatlve either in the House of Com =l>°l'0d- Y°9t°l`d“¥ it had B FGIBPBG. Iping. It would simply transfer to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick the local lawmakiug power we new bold. ‘and surrender to them the power ol .local self-government we now have This might add somewhat to the prestige of the mainland of Acadia, but how could it benefit Prince Ed- ward Island7 - There are other matters to be con- sldi red as well. During ilve months of winter, in which our access to th. mainland is so difficult and often im possible,-the time when Legislatures commonly sit and courts are held-~ our representatives and others having business of legislation, or appoint- ments, about roads, bridges, schools or litigation would have to go as they could to Sackvllle, or Amliersty or Halifax, or wherever the new capi- tal might be, to transact such busi- ness, instead of coming to Charlotte town. ` ‘ ' These things should be considered by those who would. entice Prince Ed- ward Island into a second union while it_is so sick at heart of the . first. Again. for thirty years we have tried in vain to hold the federal Gov- ernment to its obligations in regard to transportation. Death has again broken in upon our works, and at Cornwall, there has been removed from our midst to the church, one of our best and most beloved members; in the person of William Lowther. Mr. Lowther was horn at Crapliud, on September 21, 1850, and moved .to Charlottetown with his parents in 1853. In 1887, nlong with six others, he gave his heart to God under the ministry of Fl. C. Turner at Scarle- town, nud very soon after joined the Methodist (`-hurch, of which he has been a consistent incniber ever since. In 1901 he, with his family, removed to Cornwall where he has since resirl- ed. For a number of years he has been a member of the Trustee and Quarterly`0fiicial Boards. He was n trllsted member and \vell Worthy of any honor that the church could con- fer upon him. (ln the Sabbath day he was always to he found in his place in the church, hoth morning and night, and the truths tliut. he there learned were undoubtedly put into practice in his daily life. He was quiet and unassuming in his manner, was always ready with his gifts and his labor, and never shrunk from any duty or obligation- that the church placed upon him. 1-lis one thought and aim in life seemed to bc to spend himself for his Christ who had done so much for him. In gentleness, meekness and humility he was indeed a follower of the meek and lowly Jesus. In his death the church sus- tains a blow under which she bows but resigns herself to thc will of God. We pray for the bereaved family that the All-father may vouchsnfe un- tothem his sustaining grace, and may they have that peace and com- fort that he alone can give. lt was on the evening of October 17th that Mr. Lowther began to feel unwell but the next evening it was all too clear that the dread disease peritonitis had, set in. Howe-ver,‘[ hopes for his recovery were entertain-, ed until the evening of the 25th, . when he suddenly grew worse and early next morning peacefully passed away to the great beyond. - Besides a sorrowlng widow heleaves to mourn their; loss two children at home, Frank and Charlotte, also Per- cy at Carleton and Leah, Mrs. John Campbell, Summereide.
