Was it not a pitiable sign of their lack that thc $900 voted last year_to provide n lady doctor for Korea had lain idle these twelve months because there was none of them ready to go? Thir- ty-six years of active and aggressive work of the W. F. M. S., and not n medical missionary to be found. That was where they had failed. FOREIGN MISSIONS. Mrs. Mary M. Dawson, of Bridge- water, the Foreign Secretary, next submitted her report, l/n which she outlined the work accomplished by the womcn to whose hands they nad committed their foreign missioii. The report welcomed home those mission- aries and their wives and the teach- ers who 'had come for their much needed* rest, and it also made refer- ence to the fact that the meeting was being held in the Island whence the first great missionary, Dr. Ged- die, had gone forth to the New He- brides, it being the privilege of this beautiful island to be the first Brit- ish colony to send a. missionary to heathen lands. There was little to report about the mission in the New Hebrides, as the mission there was changing hands, and the last year had been one of leave-taking. Dr. and Mrs. Annand had already left, as also Dr. and Mrs. McKenzie, while the Robertsons were remaining for s little while yet. In parting they had received great kindness from the na- tive Chrlstlans, and had been made to feel that their life's work there had been greatly appreciated. Dr. McKenzie reported a gift of £50 from the natives of Ezate to the Canadian Church as a thanksgiving and an expression of their indebted- ness for the "news of Salvation" sent. to them fifty years ago, and -the faithful services of the missionaries ever since. In Demerars. things wore looking most hopeful, but what the Mission there seemed to require now was a Girls' Home, a Boys’ High School and lady helpers for work among the women, all of which were so necessary; that they would fain sec them all supplied. The progress of the work in Trinidad was also very satisfactory, but the workers there needed help to allow them to get much needed rest. In Korea the state of the work was hopeful, but more missionaries were needed for that field. FINANCE. The Treasurer, Mrs. D. Blackwood, of llnlifnx, presented hcr statement of the ilnuncos. The amounts raised for Foreign Missions during the past year by the various l’rcsbytei‘iuls were asfollows: Pictou, $»i.7.'»2_T.i; Sydney, $2,762.66; Halifax, $2,637.94; St. John, $2,525.41; Prince Edward isiami, $2,485; Truro. $1338.83; In- an I ! The next report dcnlt with was that of the Secretary of Supplies, Miss J. A. Brims, of Halifax, which showed 74 packages distributed among the Foreign Missions, an in- crease of 35 on the previous ycar's number. This report in the ubsencc of Miss Brims, was road by Miss Fal- coner. THE MESSAGE. Miss Mary A. Crulkshauk, of St. John, submitted the report of the Message, the circulation of which, it was stated, while increasing slowly was not yet what it should be, and an earnest appeal was made to each auxiliary to add to ite numbers of subscribers during the current year. As usual, the year had been one o. serious endeavor to keep the renders of the Message in touch with all -mis- sionary work and to arouse their in- terest in the same. Miss S. Fraser, of Halifax, Secre- tary-Tressurer of the Publication Committee, presented a statement of the publication. It stated that the number of Messages distributed dur- ing the past year was n. slight ln- vious year; there had been is marked decrease in the sale of catechisms, but a slight increase in the sale ui envelopes, mite boxes and barrels. The receipts by such sales amounted to $1,12l.64;'the expenditure to $1,- 016.60, leaving a balance of' $105.04. Miss Annie Murray, of New Glas- gow, the International Correspond- ing Secretnry, submitted an interest- ing report, giving some idea. of thc work undertaken by the missions of other places during the past year. On motion these reports were re- ceived; and after some discussion were all adopted. THE PRESIDENTS ADDRESS. The President, Mrs. Thompson, then delivered her address, in the course of which she said that many who were giving thoughtful atten- tion to the affairs of the W. F. and H. M. S. felt that the society was in a stage of transition. The old order had been gradually changing, and a new day was opening before the So- ciety for which they needed careful, prnycrful attention and work. They had now a dual work to accomplish, and they must adjust their vision and pluns to suit that dual work. Besides seeing to it that all the old obligations undertaken in the begin- ning had their due attention, they must see to it that they rose anew, nnd through more consecrated lives accomplish all the work at Home and nbrond that the Lord had laid upon thorn. Within the last ten years their needs for Home work had grown space. There was this point for them to consider: How could they meet their ever-increasing pro- blems of the Homeland, and of their foreign work, which if they neglected, they lost their opportunity and bless- ing? 'There were- three things they must consider as their instruments in their work as a Home and For- eign Missionary Society for using this age of opportunity: thirr funds, their membership and the children of their homes and their individual churches. While funds were needed, funds alone could not use this "age on ages tslling"; consecrated men and women could and would. With regard to funds, they raised for For- eign Missions this year, $23,070.34, and for Home Missions, $5,981.49, su increase of $127.66 for Foreign and $942.81 for Home work. Last year there was ss small increase for for- eign work snd this year it was even smaller, so small that it was and in the face of such needs. They rejoic- ed over the increase for Home work as they needed every ceut'of it. The amounts raised for the pait two or three years had not been increasing by leaps and bounds as at one time. Some might with a measure of truth say it was due to the dual nature of their work, but the whole truth lay not there. With the question of funds must be considered the matter of th_eir membership, as the members Klthered the funds, and s heulthy mombcrship would give them a satis- fill;-i_‘i_l;iIl'll|l|»§1» ui;i||‘|i|'|ii1I\uilllid I » crease over the number of the pre- 468 fsmfllsljin their Maritime eynod, ' should they not have nt least n mem- bership of 30,000? Their member- ship was only 9,703. Their numbers were growing fewer; the decrease this year was 319. But they should not he content with giving them- selves and their money, but they should give their service, and enlist all they could to build up their own church, their Home Missions and their Foreign Missions. The need was that each member be is living Home Missionary ln church and noir.- munlty, and then their membership would increase and there would be no fear for their funds. But all Lnat did not touch the vital question of the supply of men and women for the Home and Foreign fields, who are so much needed and could not be found oven after months of search and prayer, and in this respect the Pwn- ident made an earnest appeal for their assistance in the consecration of their children to the soul-satisfy- ing and glorious work of the Muster, (Applause). After an earnest prayer by Mrs. B. Rogers, the meeting then mljoiirned for luncheon, which was scrvcd by the ladies of tho church in the base- ment. At half-past two o'clock in the af- ternoon, the meeting resume-'l, when the business principally consisted of interesting addresses on some of the features of the work in Korea, which were delivered by Mrs. McRae und Mrs. Young, and of that in Trinidad by Miss Blnckadder. The two lutt.e'r showed the necessity for more work- crs in both fields. Mrs. Moline has liccn five years in Korea, and Mrs. Young eight years; while Miss llluck- udder has been working iii Trinidad for thirty-seven years. PUBLIC MEETING. At night a public meeting was hcld in Zion Church which wus largely attended, and over which the pastor, the Rev. G. C. Taylor, preui-lcd. Mr. Taylor welcomed the visiting dele- gates in the name of both Zion und St. James churches, of this city, and expressed the hope that their coming together would be the means ui iii- spirstion to them in their work, and un infusion of some new zeal for the cause of God's Kingdom. Hs also addressed some words of encourage- ment to them on what they had achieved. Dr. Whittier, late missionary in Trinidad, delivered a message from the veteran Indy m-issioner, Mrs. John Geddie, of Melbourne, their first lady missionary to Samoa. She ex- tended the hand of sympathy and en- couragement to all those in the East- ern Provinces interested in Mission work. With. Mrs. Geddie's name Dr. Whittier coupled that of Mrs. Mor- ton, still at work in Trinidad, and invited his congregation to rise to their feet in honor of those two no- ble ladies, to which invitation they readily responded. Interesting addresses were then dc livcred by Revs. J. B. Cropper and Luther Young on the state and pro- gress of the work of the Missions in British Guiana and Korea, and its needs. The",`former referred to the good work done by the many mis- sionaries sent from P. E. Island to British Guiana, whild the latter in thc course of his remarks declared that the kind of home that produced missioncrs was that of Mrs. Norton, who when her first son fell in the mission field, immediately oflercd her second son, and when ha too fell, wished she had n third to dodicnte to the work. A ctllection was taken up on be- half of the foreign missions. BHEIK WH|SKY'S SHIP [JN YUUH Llllll UNIS Drunkards will tell you with tears of sincerity that they do not want. to drink.
