makers were, in 1998, drawing from
the forests of Canada, $2,000 worth
of pulp wood for every day of the
calendar year. n
We were sending abroad a. valuable
raw material which was giving em-
ployment to many thousands in a
foreign land, and making 'millions of
profit to wealthy manufacturers
there, all of which might have better
been retained in Canada. At length
this truth has dawned, slowly but
3 strongly on the Canadian mind, and
1 our people will hereafter manufacture
pulp and pap r on a large scale for
the great markets of the globe. The
finest forests in the world and abun-
dant water power enable us to coin-
pete.
Quebec alone produced spruce lum-
ber last year to the amount of over
276,000,000 feet. To cut it into
deals and boards, yielded in wages
less than $700,000. Had it been
converted into pulp and paper the'
wages paid for the conversion would
have yielf.ied '\T,S00,000. In other
woi°rl,»- it would have left $7,000,000
more iii the province. If we add to
this the p0s~ibilities of New Bruns-

But no-.v things are moving to build ,
up this irirliistry in Canada.. Already
one great factory with $2,000,000 of
c.i._uita`l, erriployiiig directly and indir-
ectly a. iliousuiirl hands, has sprung
up ou the Sr. Maurice River, Quebec.
It turns out 40 tons of paper daily,
a rsulliclent quantity to print a mil-l
li/in copies of a.° daily paper. The
same mills produce daily 100 tons of |\

dry pulp, 35 tons of cardboard and
50 tons of sulphide pulp. And a.
thriving town of 2,400 inhabitants
has sprung up as if by magic around
the mills.
Then there are the Eddy mills at
Hull, opposite Ottawa, supporting a.
population of thousands, turning out
65 tons of paper daily. There are
other smaller mills in operation, and
many more, some of them large, in
the near prospect. In New Brun-`
swick a. million dollar mill
is being erected at Grand
Falls, and the Cushing fifty tcn inill
at St. J olin, with another at Mispec
are already in the way of being built.
An English syndicate is negotiating
to spend two million dollars in the
Lake St. John and Saguenay districts.
The Sturgeon Falls Pulp Company of
Ontario is nearly ready to compete on
a large scale in the foreign market.
Besides there are other paper making
enterprises being promoted which
lead to the belief that they will bring
into Canada as permanent invest-
ments in this line more than ten
