There is @ growing sentiment in the United States ion favor of the Canadian banking syetem. One of thefeatures which commends iteelf most strongly is the sys. tem of branches whick the Canadian banks have, extending from Nova Scotia to Brit'sh Columbia. This gives the far- mers and others in comparatively isolated quarters banking facilties vastly superior to those of the farmers similarly situated in the Uuited States. ; Farmers in Great Britain are looking fer better prices for their meats this year than last. In 1897 the numerous strikes caused depression but it is hoped that no such contingencies will arise thia year. During March the best quality of English beef was bringing 64d. per pound. Matton holds its price better than beef all the year roucd, bot that commodity as well as beefis always more or less affected by slaughteerd etock. —- —- ——-——--— + wem e-. CANADA’S EGG EXPORT. The placing of their depesits in the keep- ing of thee Gover: ment is not in the interesis of two other classes whom the Minister would prefer to favour. These, as he puts it, are the men who hsve no money in the savings banks, and that “inwer circle” who can borrow at quite a shadimg on regular bank rates. For the sake of these he knocks off another half of one per cent. from the rate of interest afiowel to the thrifty people who save a portion of their earnings. But how can he get cheaper money for his poor friends who do not save whee ihe banks wil! abate their rates only for the inner circle? LOCAL NOTICES.
