Mr. Sul- livan’s speech will appear to-morrow, Seven hundred and twenty-eight deaths occurred from small-pox in Montreal during the year 1878. Was it right, we ask, for Councillor Morris, without a moment’s notice, to deprive Ward 1 of his invaluable services ? Mr. Tuomas Morris has entered the Cave of Adullam. It remains to be seen who will be blind and foolish enough to follow him there. Mr. Morris says he follows Mr. Davies now because he followed him in 1876. But the reason he gave for following Mr. Davies in 1876 is now removed. Mr. Davies spoke loudly in the Market Hall last evening; but his actions during the past two and a half years were louder than his words. They declared, in trumpet tones, that Mr. Davies is not the man in whom may safely be committed the destinies of this Province. Hox. Mr. DaAvigs -~ unintentionally, no donbt,—left the impression upon the minds of many who attended his meeting last night— that the country members had taken a full session’s pay for their enforced attendance dur- ing the protracted dying struggle of the late Government. The members of the Legislature got enough to pay their expenses while in the city—-no more. They were paid abont half the usual allowance per day. Mr. Davies said last night that on the 3ist December, 1874, the Province had in the ‘Treasury $268,000, ‘‘and in addition,” said he, ‘‘ we drew an enormous revenue from Ot- tawa.” Mr. Davies knows right well that the $268,000 was very largely made up by means of the revenue we drew from Ottawa. In fact $209,000 of the amount named by Mr. Davies were drawn from Ottawa as revenue. Mr. Davies should cultivate accurate forms of ex- pression. A LARGE number of citizens listened with attention to the dulcet tones of the ex-Pre- mier. as he held forth in the Market Hall last evening. The electors are evincing great in- terest in the issues of the day; and they do well to hear both sides before deciding which they will take. The result of Mr. Davies’ eloquence last evening was, that Mr. Thomas Morris was nominated by J. W. Pickard and seconded by Patrick Foley. A vain and im- potent conclusion. Ross and others, of Quebec, proprietors and builders of ships and steamships, in relation to the tion in Canada of American vessels. The petition has upwards of one hundred signatures, and represents that the British navigation laws which admit American-built vessels to British registry in Canada have long been an intolerable injustice to the petition- ers and to all who are interested ia the welfare and prosperity of the Dominion. There is now a large number of steamers and other registra- vessels of United States build, which have been admitted to registery in Canada, and which have not contri- buted one cent to the revenue, while Canadian built vessels, and more particularly steamers, have been obliged to pay duties on nearly everything entering into their construc- tion, such as iron, brass, copper, boilerplate, rivets, tools, cutlery, creckery, lamps, and one hundred other things requived in their equipment. Constitutional © Gatarrh Remedy CURES CATARRKE. Hear what a Reverend Gentleman says of the Constitutional Remedy. T. J. B. Harpine, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Deak Sir—It is now two years since your “Constitutional Catarrh Remedy” was intro- duced tome. Ihave waited this long to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be ‘‘too good to be true.” I was afflicted in my head for years before I suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your Circular I saw my case described in many par- ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop” from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle I found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head. A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- me to send | you this Certificate, unsolicited, with leave to imake what use of it yon may see proper. i | ’ | Yours truly, W.
