The foreigners at that time were all in the British legation. Chinese troops were beginniog to bombard the legations from the streets. Tne legations bad been un- der rifle fire for a week previously, and in that time fvur foreigners had been killed and thirteen wounded. The marines had unsuccessfully attempted to capture a gun on a wall commanding the legations.
