SE10 The Guardian Religion By Very Rev. George First Moderator of the Monday. lanuary 1'1. 1056 and LHeh C. Pidgeon, D.D., l.L.D4 United Church of Canade (Copyright) LIFE OF SERVICE IS JESUF STORY There is one story of World War I that touches every heart. Trench warfare was established and the armies faced one mother ready at any moment for deadly combat. Christmas Day dawned. and the guns were silent. Before long peace signals were given. and the Germans came out of their trench- es and the British out of theirs and greeted one another in the true Christmas spirit. Then back to their trenches to be ready for the fight Surely no better example ever given of what an unnatura horror war 1 nations. mas bells are still ringing in our ears. Now kindness is of the very essence of the Christmas spirit- sheer human kindness. Under all our carol-singing. and iainily re- unions and religious services is the will to be kind-kind to the chil- dren in particular. kind to friends who come together from long dis- tances just to enjoy Christmas to-, gelher. kindness to many who lack the privileges we enjoy. and kind- ness in sending the Gospel or the Prince of Love to lands where cruelty reigns. - It is interesting to note the place that pure kindness holds in Jesus' conception of His Father's Will. hatching and rearing of the young. So she turned to her Son for help, as she had always done through the years, and His reaction is an exclamation: man. what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come." The question: Why Jesus spoke to His mother in this way? has puz- zled many. But Mary took His an- swer as an indication that He would do something about it. HIS SITUATION Recall Hll situation. Just behind Him was His baptism. As He came up out of the water. the Heavens burst open above Him, and He re- ceived an overwhelming communi- cation of His Fathers love and of the Holy Spirit's power. His Temp- tations followed. What are called His "Temptations" were His peo- plels ancient expectations of what their Messiah was to be and to do. Some expected Him to be a King like David and set up His throne by military power. Others" expect- ed the Messiah to descend from Heaven in splendor and establish His Kingdom by supernatural might. Jesus felt given Him power to do anything that Hza mission required. the question was: How did this God of love want Him to use His might? After data and days of imiard struggle. Jesus had He could not express the: which He had found in His Fath- er's heart by any effort to compel men”s subjection by force With the den or this dec-.s.on fresh on His -soul. He had come back home. and this opportunity to use His D0W”l' W3! Hpllinil on Him. .lesi1s was startled. Here was It chance to give practical exprrsaion to God's love He felt power with- in Him sufficient to meet any human need, but He never tried it out. He had not yet re- ceived an intimation or what His Father wanted Him to do in this situation. and until that camc. His "hour had not come". But soon it came. and the supplies for the wedding fr-ast were replenished. DEED OF KINDNESS ' Here is the point for us: The Lord Jesiis. who would not use His divine power to set up a Kingdom. did use it to do ii deed of kindness. With this young couples Oriental idea of hospital- itiy. it would have been to them a rrushinghumlllation if lheirguesis had been unprovided for.and Jesus saved them from it. God's low, which could not be rxpresseri in victories which criisherl men. was expressed in just being kind in a time of need. This was the start of .lrsus' act- responsible for that His Father had: decided thatl lovel ive ministry; now look at a lesson lHe taught near its close. He pic- tured the last Judgment with the nations brought before the throne of God. It is to those who had fed the hungry. welcomed the strang- er. clothed the naked and visited ,the prisoner and the sick to whom ,the Judge said: "Come, 0 blessed got my Father, inherit the King- ldom prepared for you from the foundations of the world." when they asked an explana- tion. He added: "As you did it to wasione of the least of these. my breth- ren. you did it to me". So His life is between Christian of service began. and so it closed. As we write the Christ- And all the way between. Jesus could never resist an appeal for help no matter how embarrassing giving it was to Himself. To Him ,kindness was the expression of His 'Father's will. i , Strange But True By F. H.
