Julie 6.-The Canadian public must be prepared for bad news from the front. Our losses in,the Sanctuary Woods fight have been _very heavy. Taken in conjunction with today’s appaling calamity that has taken off the Secretary of State for War, the moving genius of the British Army, the news is unprecedented" in its do- pressing aspect. Since the repulse of two German infantry attacks between Fort Vaux and Damloup Monday night the fight- ing in Verdun region has again devel- oped into artillery duels, with the Fort Vaiix Dainloup sector the centre of greatest violence. OTTAWA, Julie 6.-Early this morn- ing a report was received that a Bri- tish cruiser with Earl Kitchener, Min- ister of War and staff, had been sunk e off the Orkneys. The report was al- most incredible but, unfortunately later the news was officially confirmed. lt seems Lord Kitchener was on his way to Russia in connection with de- velopments of the Russian campaign and left London unannounced. Ger- rnuii spies had got wind of his movements, however, and when the Hampshire was oft’ the _Orkney lslaiids she was attacked by a German sub- marine and sank in a few minutes. Four bouts were seen from the shore to leave the vessel but no trace of them luis since been seen and as a storm raged it is feared all wore wrecked. Only one capsized boat and some bodies have been found. Ad- miral Jellicoe’s oillcial report is as follows: "LONDON, June 6.-I have to re- port with deep regret that H. M. S. Hampshire with Lord Kitchener and his staff on board was sunk about eight p. m. to west of the Orkheys either by a mine or a torpedo. Four boats were seen by observers on the shore to leave the ship. As the whole shore has been searched by patrol vessels, I greatly fear that there is vors. No report has yet been receive from the search party on shore."
