Tae Montreal Gazetle says: The rumors which have been current for: some days of probable changes in the Cabinet at Ottawa, are, we have reason te believe; without the slightest foundation in fact. The Hon. Mr. Bfancket has gone to Ottawa in connection with his duties ag Speaker of the Hlouse of Commons, and not with reference, as was stated, to political changes. The Hon. Mr. Masson, we are glad to know, is very much better, and we are sure all his friends will heartily join us in the wish that he may long be spared to fulfill the duties of the import- pant offiee which he holds. Tue Supreme Court or Canansa.—The Toronto Afail of Monday has a severe article on the Supreme Court of the Dominion ; point- ing out that since its establishment it has cost close on to $190,000. ‘The Afail says that the Court has not fulfilled the purposes for which it wag created ; that it has not hastened the proc »sses of the law in its last resort ; that it nas rather increased than diminished the ex penses of appellant's litigation; that ia fact it ig easier and cheaper. to take an ‘appeal to London than to Ottawa.—Two judgments were delivered during the recent session of the Court. ————— SE A cCA4RLE DESPATCH of the latest date says: Giadstone’s Scotch tour continues to occupy attention almest exclusively. I¢ is the universal admission that never did an English statesman evoke evoke equal en thusiasms Advanced Liberals everywhere adhere cordially to Gladstone’s pregramme, the general conclusion of the wrole party is that Gladstone’s future leadership is essential to Liberal success. Financial authorities pro- uounced his speech on finances destructive of contidente in the Government. An equally high social authority says this tour has been a revelation to London society, and carries con- sternaiion among the classes that hitherto believed Gladstone’s popularity had decayed. A REMARKABLE story’ of the recovery of stolen property throvgi: the influence of ‘‘mediums’ is reperted from Digby, N.S. In August last, while Capt. Mussells was walking in the held of the schooner *‘Kva,” lying at Ciements port, some one in the open day went into the cabin and stele his gold watch and chain, valued at 3200. No one was in the vicinity but two small boys, on whom sus- picion fastened. They protested their inno- cence, and stated that while they were fish- ing they’ saw two men board the schooner, stay a few moments, then walk towards Digby. Pursuit was made and the men arrested, but no watch was found on them, and as there was no evidence to detain them in custody, they were discharged. -Meaniime, Captain Mussell$ went to Boston, and consulted a ‘‘medinm,” who told that the watch would be returned. Shortly afterwards the captain re- ceived a letter from Bridgewater, stating that the property could be secured. Proceed- ing there, he visited a man named Dominic Hayes, who was found wearing a gold chain and pin, and gave the name of the person who had the watch. Both of the articles were re- covered, and now Captain Mussels is a firm believer in spiritualism. - 11, 1879. sue qe or oe a z - . _— evening. | ith her muff, and was arrested j a ans NO, 18, NEWS BY TELEGRAPH.
