Mr. Curley had always been interested in improving his forest so when management programs began in the early 805, he contacted the staff at the Central Forest District for some advice and assistance. For the past several years, Darlene Hendricken, a Private Land Technician, has been helping him by sharing her knowledge of forest management and offering access to the forest incentives program. "John is an excellent woodlot owner who has shown a great deal of interest in the day to day business of woodlot management," said Ms. Hendricken. "working with him is a pleasure because he does most of his own work. Whether he’s thinning, harvesting, or planting, he’s always planning for the future because he wants to develop the woodlot for his family." Recognition for forest stewardship also goes out to George Matheson of Kilmuir and Johnny Gallant of St. Timothee for winning the Eastern and Western District Awards. Editor’s Note: Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary defines stewardship as "the individual’s responsibility to manage his life and property with proper regard to the rights of others". Each of us has these choices on various scales. Its a pleasure to salute the achievements John has made with the retention of riparian zones, planting of hedgerows around fields, and the utilization of a wide variety of other treatments to improve his properties. NEWS FROM ABOUT by Dan McAskill The Island Nature Trust’s Tenth Annual Fund Raising Dinner was held on April 22nd at the Prince Edward Hotel. Thanks to the hard work of the many volunteers and staff, the donors of the artwork, services, and items for the action and raffles, and those who bought raffle tickets, dinner tickets, and auction items, the _dinner raised $ 14,000 towards the conservation work of the Trust. As each dollar raised normally allows access to one or more conservation dollars from other funds, the dinner has been one of the primary events allowing the Trust to acquire the 701 acres of natural areas in Prince Edward Island and to implement one of the most successful conservation and natural areas education programs in Canada. _ Two of our newest Christmas bird counters, Bryon Howard and Shirley Wright have opened a new business on the Island which combines spectacular views of our Island with a bit of adventure and learning.
