Tue trial of the good Grits who operated the little Trap door at St. Anne’s, will take place on the 17th. There are six of ; them. Tne brig Zinga, McLeod, master, owned by Messrs. Peake Bros. & Co., arrived here from Liverpool to-day, with a cargo of salt to the owners. YESTERDAY evening a runaway team came in contact with the lamp post at the Union |; Bank corner and tore it from its position. It was replaced to-day. Ir is said that Lord Dufferin declared he would not depart until he had sworn in his friend, Sir John, the godfather of the first child of his born in Canada. TwELVE million bushels of grain eleva- tors at four American cities. Such, in round numbers, is the amount stored at Chi- cago, Milwaukee, Brooklyn and New York. Tue members of Port ia Joie Encamp- ment, I. O. O. F., will celebrate their sec- ond anniversary by dining together with their friends on Thursday evening next, 24th inst., at the Revere House. On Thursday night a thief entered the forecastle of the barkentine Hrema, and after selecting a choice lot of the sailors’ best clothing, departed from the ship with- out being noticed. The seamen did not miss their clothing until the following morning, when they reported the matter to the police. The robber is still at large. Tue sleamer ‘‘ Worcester’ arrived from Boston on Wednesday night, with a gen- eral cargo of merchandize, and the follow- ing passengers: Mr. John Bertram, Miss Rebecca McDonald, Capt, J. N. Lund, Miss M. J. Campbell, Miss M. McDonald, Miss Kate Gillis, Miss Belle McDonald, Miss Maggie Cameron, Mr. Richard Willen, Mr. N "Bobins. InFLveNTIAL Montreal friends of Mr. Tilley and Dr. Tupper entertained them at dinner at the St. Sean Club, Montreal, on Friday night. Among the guests were Sir Francis Hincks, Sir A. T. Galt, James Mc- Donald, James Domville, Peter Mitchell, the Montreal M. P’s, Messrs. Angus and Stephen of the Bank of Montreal, Mr. Bowell, and Senator Mr. Aikens. Tue steamer Worcester will sail for Bos- ton at 7 o'clock, this evening, with a cargo of about 1000 bbls. mackerel, 3,000 barrels potatoes, 200 bbls. herring, 350 boxes eggs, and the following passengers : Miss C. Mc- Isaac, Miss Anna McDonald, Miss Jane Stewart, Miss Hannah Gillis, Miss Mary J. Clarey, Miss Martha J. Campbell, Miss Maggie McDonald, Mr. Howard McLean, Miss A. Budd. Arthe Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, Alex. McCabe and John Coyle, fighting on Hillsborough Square on Satur- day last, were each fined $2 and costs, or 8 days ; James O’ Neill, drunk and incapable, was fined $1 and costs, or 4 days; Angus Currie, for the same offence, was fined $2 and costs, or 8 days; Henry McFayden, arrested for being out after hours, was dis- charged. A moveMENT has been started for the erection of a statue of Earl Russel in the City of Lendon, which the deceased noble- man so long represented. Among the sub- scribers already on the list are the Earl of Beaconsfield, Mr. Gladstone, Lord Salis- bury, Sir Stafford Northcote, the Arch- bishop of Cantebury, the Marquis of Hart- ington, Lord Granville, Lord Derby, Mr. Goschen and Mr. Cross. In consequence of the head tax now levied in British Columbia, the Chinese in every branch of employment have struck, and telegrams had been sent to various points inviting white labour to the Pro- vince. Some white female cooks have ar- rived in Victoria, but although they offered to work as cheaply as the Celestials they experienced considerable difficulty in se- curing engagements. A Montreat dispatch of the 15th inst. rzports : ‘‘In consequence of the announce- ment of only a five per cent. half-yearly dividend by the Bank of Montreal to-day, its stock fell from 167? to 155. Montreal telegraph stock fell three percent. City Gas stock has fallen 22 per cent. in two days. The stock market is described as panicky and demoralized. St. Lawrence Hall was closed up by creditors to. On Tuesday the Local Government of Nova Scotia resigned, and the Lieutenant Governor sent for Mr. Holmes, leader of the Opposition, to ask hin to form a Gov- ernment. The Herald understands that Mr. Holmes accepted the task. No an- nouncement of the new Cabinet will likely be made till the 21st inst. Considering the weight and delicacy of the duty which now devolves on Mr. Holmes, it is well that nothing like precipitation should mark the initial steps of the new administration. Tue purse “containing sixty dollars and five blank checks,” which was lost between the Revere House and the Post Office on the night of the 9th inst., and which was advertised in ou ‘‘ Want and Lost” column, has, without doubt, been found by a most dishonest person—a person who would not scruple to pick it from the pocket of the loser. Early on Tuesday morning last, a little boy, who said he was from the gountry, entered the law office of Messrs. Hodgson & McLeod, and left the lost purse with one of the students. On opening it the student found that the purse contained all save and except the sixty dollars. The boy did not wait for the reward for “ the lost purse.” Literary Notes. Mr. Charles Dickens has undertaken to write a life of the late Charles Matthews. based upon material supplied by the execu- trix, including, for the early years of his life, an autobiography prepared for publication by Mr. Matthews. The new Life of William Cobbett, by Ed- ward Smith, will be published during the coming season. ‘The work of Mr. Smith is the result of many years’ study into the motives and results of Cobbet’s varied actions. He takes a more favorable view of Cobbet’s career than that which has prevailed with the general public. The example of Punch in publishing its vol- ume of Beaconsfield cartoons has been followed by Judy, who announces a similar collection illustrating the career of Mr. Gladstone. These cartoons cover a period of only ten years, while those of Punch cover thirty. Each cartoon has a short explanatory foot- note, which gives the circumstances under which it was published. A rich treasure has been offered the British National Portrait Gallery for purchase—an original likeness of Charles Lamb, painted by the artist and essayist, William Hazlitt, and presented to Coleridge. It represents Lamb at the age of about thirty, in a sixteenth cen- tury Spanish costume, half length and full size, and is said to show Hazlitt’s capability asa painter to be inferior only to his acknowl- edged ability as an author. Tennyson’s recent visit to the wilds of Con- nemara, in Ireland, promises to bear fruit in a new idyl called ‘‘The Daughter of Dervar- ghal.” ‘The story is said to be founded on a romantic passage in Irish history, and to have its incidents and scenes laid entirely in Ire- land. It is the intention of Moxon & Co., of London, to publish Dore’s illustrations of the ‘** Tdyls of the King” in one volume. They have obtained Mr. ‘Tennyson’s permissicn to print the passages from the poems which are ulustrated in the plates. A writer in the London Jimes says that in Mr. Gladstone’s notable article entitled, ‘‘Kin beyond the Sea,” the couplet from Heber’s ‘* Palestine” is strangely misquoted. Instead of the lines— ** No workman's steel, no ponderous hammers rung, Like some tall palm the stately fabric sprung,” as incorrectly given by Mr. Gladstone, they should read— ‘* No hammer fell, no ponderous axes rung, Like some tall palm the mystic fabric sprung.” Epwarkp Hanian IN 1860.— The following item from the Toronto Colonist of September 6th, 1860, will be read with interest by all the friends of Hanlan: ‘‘We are informed that a young child named Edward Hanlan, three and a halt years of age, will, to-day, weather per- mitting, row across the bay in a small boat, starting from the Island at twelve or three o’clock, the first hour if the weather is suitable.
