Then there is the matter of the 4,000 and odd dollars short and unaccounted for. The Opposition attempted to show that this discrepancy is caused by the fact that the interest, sceruing from the several amounts due at the Land Office, is not all mate up at the end of the year, but is charged to each debtor as it becomes due. That fact does not alter the case. terest ie charged at some time in the year, and the whole sum of the interest ought, therefore, to be made up by the end of the year. But there ie, on the Commissioner's ewn showing, 4 shortage of $4,421 51— either principal or interest. Surely the Opposition and the public are entitled to a reasonable explanation of this matter. We have no doubt that the present Com- missioner of Crown Lands imagines that he is being misrepresented before the public. But there ought to be a much more con- clusive as well as more dignified way of reassuring the disturbed mind of the pub- lic in respect to this shortage than that of shouting “‘liar.’’ If the Commissioner can- not find that way, the public will be veiy apt to conclude that he is in the wrong. The in- Educational. On the subject of examinations the Pupu- lar Educator has the following : **‘We de- sire to place upon record our emphatic pro test against the value placed upon examin- ations as criteria for judging of the ablity of the teacher or the excellence of the supervision. Neither the quality of the teaching nor the supervision can these examinations test. They are sufticient tests only of thai which is purely mechani- cal, as for instance, penmanship, spelling, and, perhaps, the construction of sentences. The true method of judging of the value of j instruction is by observation of the teacher and class at work, and those whose vubser- vation is at all extended know thai nine times out of ten narrowed, if not inferior, teaching gives the best examination results. Pens will go up from many a sensitive teacher’s lips when popular sentiment has strangled the examination fiend and Pluto claims his own. Theophilus G. Wadman, a former resident of Charlottetown, died at Roxbury, Maes., on Tuesday last. We learn that Francis Dogherty, Esq , was offered the office of High Sheriff of Queen’s County, and declined it. There succeeds a scene cor- ceived in the loftiest spirit of dramatic art. [he supplications of the followere of Baal growing gradually more vehement under the tauats and gibes of Elijah, 1e main in the ead unanswered. Baal is silent. Eljsh then invokes the Lord God of Abraham, and the descent of the fire which consumcs the sacrifice is described by the people ia a chorus of wonderful energy, after which the Prophet orders all the Priests of Baal te be instantly slain, and siogs of the terrors of God’s anger on sinnets. Elijth next imolores the Lord to open the heavens and send rain ou the parched earth. Phe people reiterate the Prophet's petition, in strains «3s melodious ag any that Mendelssohn ever wrote. [fwice ie the prayer repeated —and still the heavena remain #8 brase. The Prophet pressea his petition, no longer in lengthened prayer—but in short, earnest ejaculations, ‘‘And behold a little cloud arises from the waters—like a man’s hand.’ Oa comes the storm of rain, and the graud chorus ‘‘Thanks be to God,” bursts from the gratefa! people. This conclad+a the Ficet Part. Tne Second Part is occ upied with the persecution waged againet the Prophet by Jezebel; ‘*The mighty have gathered against him, and have prepared a net for his steps.” He lias to withdraw to the wildernese; there he pours forth ia exquisite song his feelings, and falle asleep beneath a juniper tree, with angela encamped around him. Again is he roused to travel forty, days and forty nights to Horeb. An angel there tells him to stand on the mount and veil his face, for the Lord draws nigh. The chorus which follows is filled with mystery—at its conclusion the Holy, Holy, Holy, cf the angels break forth. Eiijsh is comforted, and sings his last song of confidence that the covenaut of peace shall not be removed. As described by the chorus, a fiery chariot descends and the Prophet is carried in ‘ta whirlwind to heaven.” The above, although a very imperfect out- line of a great work, may yet serve the pur- pose of rendering Tuesday’s concert more nteresting -——-_-_ —__ — Religious Services.
