Cousul General Bonham at Calcutta gives an estimate of the India wheat crop for 1399 at 201,000,000 bushels, against 243,- U76,000 bushels last year, and says the vrice 1s 60 to 70c. per bushel in different parts of India. _ The official report of the Irish fisheries 13 very Satisfactory, for itappears that last year the produce was valued at £331,000, as compared with £191,000 in 1883. -The inackerel fishing was very successful, no ‘oss a quantity than 443.090 ecwt. having been lasxen, a8 against 102,000 cwt. in 1888. There are 369,000 miles of railroad in the world, or envugh to reach around the world fourteen and one-half times. There are 104,000 locomotives. England has eighty locomotives for every 100 miles of road, hile in the United States there are only uiucieen to every 100 miles. The railroad capitsl of the world is estimated at $29,- ~ 000,000,000, Between 600 and 700 pounds of frovs’ legs, says the Pictou Times, are shi, pe from Kingston to New York every week. The retail price is 124 cents a pound and the duty levied by tae United States 23 cents, ‘hough sume of the packages, it is said, are shipped as fish at one cent. The trogs are gathered by men who make be- tween $7 and $8 per week, at Odessa, Verona, Parmalee Lock, Marble Ruck, Rideau Liver, Gananoque, and at ports along the Rideau River. The Philadelphia? Times quotes Major Carson, clerk of the United States house committee of Ways and means, in support of the assertion that the expenditure of the United States for the current year will ex- ceed the revenue by $100,000,000 at the least, and possibly by 144,000,000. This, if it be true, is a startling condition of affairs for a nation which has been producing large surpluses. The caiculation allows a loss of revenue t> the extent of $50,000,000 by the McKinley tariff bil. The bill may not pass the sex ancl may not produce the sup- p sed result if it does pass, sv that the real deficit may be placed at $90,000,000 to $94, - 000,000. The change from 4 big surplas to a big deficil is caused by increased appropria- tions all round, and especially in appro- priation of pensions. sata ¢ iv ¢ _— > A Gatuant Boy-—The Journal reports that on Sunday afternoon last, Harry Hol- man, son of Mr. R.
