Chsrlc/etown has been 11y honored by the many Conventions held here during (the or. The most outstanding were the Con- vention of the Union of Munici- palities of the Province of Quebec, and the visitstim of Masonic of the Masonic Grand the British Isles and the United States of America, Bctih of these gatherings were of almost historic importance to our City and taxed the hospitality of our citizens to utmost. The splendid manner in which these visitors were en- tertained has added greatly to the popularity of our City as 8. Con- vention centre. Gorvemor Delalois _ for the wonderful manner in which he has looked after all our guests on every occasion and his kindness to them will not soon be forgotten. Of much interest to our citizens was the visit of the British Omis- er Orion. The excellent band of this ship gave a fine concert and military tattoo on Queen square which was thoroughly enjoyed. The French Sloop D'Entrecasbeaux and the an Destroyer skeeria were also in rt. ‘Their officers and men are aways welcome and we appreciate their visits. Each year takes its toll of prom- inent citizens and 1938 was no ex- ception. in the passing of Ex- Msyors Judge Wm. S. Stewart and Leonard B. Miller, Charlottetown has lost two distinguished sons who halve worked faithful. and well in her uterests. Their oss is keenly felt by the whole commun- ity. The various Committees of the Council have performed their duties in a business-iike way and the reports of their Chairmen cov- er their work very t.‘horoughLv. I feel there is very little for me to add. other than a. short com- mentary on each department. Finances The Finance Committee have had it very trying time, more especially towmds the end of the year. Just now it is very important that the Council give its best efforts to ap- point an efficient city Clerk and an Accountant. and formulate a system of m ement that will safeguard the in crests of the citi- nens, and place the business of the City on a solid foundation. This is an opportune time. Councillor. Chandler's report covers the work of this department well. and he and the other members are deserving of unstlnted praise. The street Committee under the management of Councillor Hen- nessey have done good work. A great deal of patching was neces- sary on the asphalt streets. and the concrete and wooden side- walks had extensive repairs made. Several streets were paved by con- tract, making 8. total of 1'1 1 miles to date. on both sides of Queen Square a large strip of concrete was laid which was very ecessary for parking purposes The reports of Chnimian Hennossey and city Rive an excellent account of work done and they are highly commended for same. Owing to the different projects necessitated by Unemployment, the Chairman of the Public Property Committee and his associates have been if t busy, They have been very dil gent in their attention to duty as Chairman Blanchard’: no- will sh¢\'. and I compliment em on their work.
